"...Indeed, it is rare to see any government - especially in this day and age - taking a step back from the slippery slope. Not only have the Liberals adopted a policy of fiscal responsibility by introducing massive tax cuts (25% on personal income tax alone), reducing the civil service by about a third and reforming and reducing welfare but they've also made strides in increasing a degree of social and political freedom as well. Just around Christmas of 2001 the Provincial government served their Federal Liberal counterparts with notice that the province of BC would no longer continue to administer nor enforce federal firearms laws (Thats the SPIRIT! Hey that's supposed to be OUR Spirit!!! And some call em Canuckleheads...Shame). The registration center established by the former Socialist New Democratic Party in Victoria is slated to be shut down by about April 1st of this year. From there on the feds will have to deal with this dirty little mess on their own.
YIKES Canada beating the US at FREEDOM? Which state shall be first to "serve our Federal counterparts with notice that the state will no longer continue to administer nor enforce FFL's"?????? How did the US let Canada beat us to this? Outrageous.

IMHO, this is the North American equivalent of the Berlin Wall coming down. Perhaps the fallout will generate more news articles.

Fercryin' out loud, they should be picketing to sell the hospital to a private interest.

We can create a public education system that's the envy of the world and develop a public health care system that meets the needs of all BC families, regardless of where they live. And we can bridge the "digital divide," to ensure all British Columbians can participate in the new world of technology and communicate through high-speed Internet access. And it was starting to sound good, too...

I've not paid much attention to BC politics until now, but from what I've seen in the links above, the new course is significantly different from the NDP direction.

Thanks for your interest in B.C. politics. Historically, it's at least as interesting as Alberta's. ;^)
I've followed B.C. politics for over 40 years, and I believe this is the most radical shift yet from a previous government's regime.
However, the B.C. socialists(gov't emps) are not going to give up their feeding spots without a fight.
This is going to get ugly.

New Democrat, Jenny Kwan (one of only two elected to the Legislature) complained: "It's almost unbelievable, but Gordon Campbell has eliminated the ministries of Environment, Aboriginal Affairs and Women's Equality, and there is no mention at all of housing,".Yeah, it's unbelievable, but not in the way she means.

Huge turnout for Delta hospital rally
VANCOUVER (CKNW) More than 1,000 Delta residents turned out...That's huge?
To: headsonpikes
I agree it could get ugly. Even if the catfighting stays internal, there will still be some effects on the bordering states (ie. socialists fleeing to WA, ID etc.).
My guess is that government employment accounts for half or more of the labor force. Considering the size and resources of BC compared to the sparse population, there's no excuse for it not to have a vibrant economy, except that the socialists have strangled it. Aside from population, the same could be said for the coastal US states.

The situation in B.C. is much like WA state: the Metropolis is full of left-wing mush-heads and sheeple, but the hinterland is well-populated with self-reliant, old-fashioned types, fed up to the teeth with disastrous socialist mismanagement of the economy and government.
This fight will not be over in a day, or even a year; the commies are patient, vindictive, and ruthless.
There WILL be left-wing assaults on the government's legitimacy at every opportunity.
It's going to be get VERY ugly. :-(

I haven't yet searched to see how large Delta is, or what percentage 1000 would be.
What is significant here is that our news media (whenever they do look north) has been telling us for years how the Canadians overwhelmingly and so warmly embrace socialism (and why can't we just get with the program). It's good news for the world when anyone anywhere rejects collectivist, parasitical tyrants. If they can do it, so can we.

British Columbia finally started getting their act together when they realized that Alberta has a very good thing going. The combination of Canadian natural resources (oil, gas, timber, etc.) coupled with a very weak Canadian dollar means that any province that is willing to do things the right way will attract a ton of business from the U.S.
