Turkey is the only reason I have to grudingly grant may contain moderate Muslims. They are the main religion in Turkey, yet there are Christians there and other religions also that are not harmed or threatened.

First Andy Jackson's history lesson and now this! Tell that to all the Greeks expelled from Turkey. But you probably don't want to hear about it. I remember Andy Rooney bitching about all the mail he got from Greek Americans when he mistakenly said that Turks painted an Icon of Christ. Not only did he not apologize, but he was pissed that the Greeks were busy giving him a history lesson and refusing to let go of their hatred for Turks!

But it is exactly statements like the above that I find unbearable.

This is just what the media is putting out, that in Turkey there are no fundalmentalist extremist and Christians live there also. Why would the US be considering letting Turkey enter the battle in Afghanistan if this is not the case?

Not handy; but I think you should be able to find it on the Forward web site. If not, I will try to dig it up for you...

On the surface this looks good, but as much as I like the Turks and I do, Turkey's occupation of Afgan would certainly be unacceptable to Russia and India.

Wonder what it was like in 1913? Great aging empires struggling to maintain power, new vigorious empires looking to expand, Balkins in turmoil. Are we in for a repeat?

You said in post #57:

They are the main religion in Turkey, yet there are Christians there and other religions also that are not harmed or threatened.

And then you said in post#63:

This is just what the media is putting out, that in Turkey there are no fundalmentalist extremist and Christians live there also. Why would the US be considering letting Turkey enter the battle in Afghanistan if this is not the case?

You know what? Never mind.

First Andy Jackson's history lesson and now this!

Are you Greek too? You just proved whatever silly point I was trying to make.

Andy Jackson wrote: Are you Greek too?

What does my ethnic or national background have to do with it? Unless of course, you are biased against Greeks, then that matters to you.

You just proved whatever silly point I was trying to make.

Whatever you say.

I was refering to:

Trojans were Turks? To get the historical order correct, you mean Turks are Trojans?

History implies chronology and order implies heirarchy. Turks arrived in anatolia about 1800 years after Troy was sacked. So you logic is muddled here.

I don't know if the original Trojans were Turkic or not, but thats besides the point since there is a difference between being of Turkic origin and being a Turk from Modern Turkey. Are you suprised that there are Turks in Turkey that are not ethnicly Turkish?

To a large extent probably, in that modern Turks are a mix of the Turkish tribes from Altay area whose appearance was distinctly Mongolian, if historical depictions are to believed, and the indigenous peoples of Asia Minor - many of whom were of the same origin as Greeks.

To paraphrase: Turks have Trojan blood in them because they have the blood from all the people from anatolia in them. Too simplistic.

Greek resentment of whooever occupies Asia Minor is not difficult to understand.

What do you base that statement on. Could the reverse also be true?

Greece has always depended upon trade through the Dardenalles to obtain grain from the Black Sea.

Yeah right. This is the kind of history lesson I was refering to.

So what does Turkey gain from this would seem to be a pertinent question!

Don't underestimate the Turks amibitions. They've been trying to expand their influence into Central Asia since the Soviet Union imploded. There is also all that oil in the ground in the region. This sounds like a smart move by the Turks. They fix their relations with Pakistan - Get a toehold in Afganistan and maybe Uzbekistan - and make their good friends the Americans happy. As an added bonus it will really pi$$off the Iranians.

That would help explain why Turkey has a cordial relationship with Israel.

They produced the major Islamic stateman in the last century
Not quite true. Ataturk was an atheist who detested Islam and loathed Mohammed.
Here we go again. I had almost forgotten where I was. Man why don't you just shut up! Ataturk was no Atheist, but a secular Muslim. Who the hell do you think you are? You must be a short fat dude who gets no respect from his wife.

note our deal with Putin to develop and import oil from Russia. I'm sure the Turks want in on the construction, drilling, etc. contracts. And they are perfectly situated, by language and culture, to participate
That's right, but the hell with Russia. We're not letting 50000 tankers a year through our straits.

The Turks are like the girl who likes you that you don't want anything to do with. They'll do anything for you, but they never seem to get the respect they deserve, knowwhuddamean?
Dude, we know what we want, and we know how to get it. Everybody is scared of what we are or what we're going to be. There's no stopping us. And this one is a no brainer for us. We hate terrorists with a passion, and you are surrounded by pussies. We'll watch each other's back but we won't kiss in public.

Also, you'd make a much better girl than me I think. What do you say about that?

How easy we Americans can be fooled.
Guys, beware of Pericles the Greek. He's one of those who is scared of me and has worked on manipulating you for centuries. At this point I have no interest in his piddlyass country.

If you wanna read a BBC article about Greeks jeering during the moment of silence for the WTC victims, then click here: Greek Allegiances Tested

Sorry Pericles, but you asked for it. Just don't ask for more.

Pericles, I disagree on this one. We shouldn't make the mistake of viewing the muslim world as monolithic.

Remember the Arab rebellion that resulted in the destruction of the Ottoman Empire at the end of WWI? The Turks haven't.

The Turks have been cultivating a position of influence among the Turkic nations of Central Asia since the end of the Cold War.

The Turkish people would approve Turkish military support for the Turkic armies of the Northern Alliance.

I'm sorry, but the idea that the Turkish people would support a radical Wahabbi Arab muslim like Bin Laden over Turkic claims to power in Afghanistan is just absurd.

The idea of using Turkish troops, who don't take no crap offa nobody, to occupy Kabul to avoid using US or British troops is pretty darn smart.
