Seattle

Very quiet downtown. Federal building and three other large buildings evacuated. Many businesses in "lockdown"; that is, you must have identification to enter. I see numerous emergency vehicles on the street, parked, with lights on, but no reports of incidents. Traffic nonexistent (and THAT's saying something hereabouts). Reports Canadian border closed are unconfirmed. No news on KAL flight downed north of here. No cars being transported on ferries but all are running in passenger-only mode. Most of the people at my company (downtown) have gone home.

Northern Virginia:

Our office building in Reston was evacuated about 10:30am. Exiting the parking garage took about 45 minutes - on a positive note, drivers were courteous.

Trip home to Alexandria, normally 45 minutes, took nearly three hours. Took to the side streets, in lieu of the highways. This looked to be a good strategy, since most of the traffic jams occured near major road junctions and entrances.

Rumors on the airwaves that the "Beltway" (Interstate 495) was closed, but later reports indicated this to not be true. However, Shirley Higway (Interstate 395, a major north-south Virginia highway into Washington, DC) was closed northbound. Shirley Highway goes straight past the Pentagon before ending at the Potomac river bridges. Presumably southbound Shirley Highway was open to facilitate the egress from DC. All major and minor routes around the Pentagon were pretty much closed off. Metrorail system was running, but Pentagon station was bypassed.

Governor Gilmore declared a state of emergency, and asked Commonwealth residents to avoid unnecessary car trips (presumably after getting home). Shopping Malls closed.

Received an email from our local church announcing a special liturgy at 7:30 this evening.

from southwest Indiana:
All is strangely quiet in this university town. Long lines at gas stations, out of fear of rising prices. People pretty much numb, praying. Gov't offices closed. Strange to hear no airplane traffic. Railroad seems quiet, too, for some reason.
God bless America.

Two U.S. Navy frigates and a destroyer have been deployed to Elliot Bay in Seattle, "As a precautionary measure"

Glad to hear that. Just heard on local TV that so many people are giving blood, facilities are maxed out. They urge blood donors to call and make appointments over the next two weeks.

Y'know, funny you should ask...

I am practically within walking distance from Whiteman AFB (Home of the Stealth bomber, aka Darth Vader's limo), and I've neither seen nor heard any aircraft overhead today. Generally there's at least 2-3 flying, barring bad weather.Today...nothing.

In a small central Indiana town: Schools closed, public gatherings of all sorts cancelled, rumours rampant of gas prices skyrocketing. It would be nice if the local tv stations would interrupt the national coverage and address some disconcerting rumours that I've heard...

Omaha, NE -- President Bush touched down aboard Air Force One at Offut Air Base in Bellevue, a suburb of Omaha. The giant blue and white Boeing 747 was accompanied by several escort planes, which landed immediately before and after the president's plane. Several aircraft remained in the air following the safe landing of the presidential jet.

Base personnel escorted the president to an underground command center, where he was reportedtly to contact the National Security Council.

Eppley Airport is closed. Highway 75, which passes near Offut Air Base, is also closed to through traffic. All non-essential Air Force personnel have been dismissed from the base, and not even news media are allowed beyond the entrance gate.

A former member of the Air Force One service crew has stated that the specially equipped presidential craft can refuel in the air, and carries two complements of crew aboard. As a result, the airplane can stay aloft indefinitely.

UPDATE: As of 4:30 Central, Air Force One had departed Offut Air Base in Bellevue, NE. Its destination was unknown.

Just had a call from a friend in Birmingham, England. She says the city is deserted. Everyone is glued to TV and stunned, just like folks here.

My friend's mother called me from Portugal, where she is vacationing. She can't wait to get home.

Just watched Tony Blair on C-SPAN offering condolences and, as was to be expected, resolutely supporting President Bush and the American people.

Some things go deeper than party politics.

This Brit also offers sympathy to the victims and their families.

I have every confidence that President Bush will deal well with this tragedy.

San Diego, CA. I've heard reports that the border is still open but security is tightened. I would have thought that they would shut the border down but I suppose that Americans in Mexico might not want to get shut out. The airport is closed at least until 9am on 9/12 pending FAA notification of resumption of flights. The Harbor is closed by the Coast Gaurd and will remain so until further notice. PLEASE PRAY FOR WISDOM FOR OUR NATIONS LEADERS!

NORTHEAST WISCONSIN

We have the same as all of you..Schools, Malls, Govt. Bldg.'s, Most people doing what they have to but in a fog.

I want to give thanks to the Green Bay Area T.V. Channels...They are running on the bottom of their screen, where the PRAYER SERVICES will be taking place today and tonight

On one channel (local) there was rolling names and addresses of churches that are holding prayer services this evening. There was a beautiful hymn playing...no talking...just the scroll of Christian churches and Synagog's banding together to pray for our President, our land, the families that lost loved ones...and strength for our President at this time.

May God give him strength and wisdom.

Memo already came out to the docs here in the Indian Health Service Commissioned Corps to be ready in case they get called up. Gas lines long, and the refineries in Tulsa are closed.

I live in Tulsa, but unfortunately I was visiting my parents in a small town out in the boonies when the attacks occurred, and was forced to buy gas there. During the day, gas jumped up fifty cents. Either the people running the gas stations are falling prey to hysteria, or they are taking advantage of it. I ended up paying $1.78 a gallon [it was around 1.44 early that morning.] and saw long lines everywhere. Right after I got my gas they went to 1.99. The price gouging has definitely hit smaller towns. On the way home I saw a station selling gas for 2.99 a gallon. The Attorney General has asked people to avoid buying gas today if at all possible. There have been long lines and cases of "pump rage" in Tulsa, but the prices here have remained stable. I haven't checked the supermarkets yet. All the churches are holding prayer services tonight. Saw a truck with two American flags waving from it on the way home. That was great.

Airport is closed, of course, and two of the local colleges aren't having classes tonight. Schools stayed open, but some afterschool activities have been cancelled. One mall closed.

I'm marooned in Madrid, supposedly deploying software. I feel totally disconnected. Citizens here seem pretty sympathetic, I hope my customer is, too.

Any Freepers in Madrid??
