According to Haiti’s own history or myth the people sold their souls to the devil to get rid of French domination in that country. The French were murdered and run out leaving Haiti on it’s own. The US did some work there from 1915-1934. All for nothing. It has been a sh*t hole ever since and has gotten worse.
It wasn’t even all that bad in the 1950s, before the Duvaliers took over.

It’s informative to go to Googlemaps satellite view of Hispaniola. In much of the shared border with the Dominican Republic, the demarcation of the land is starkly seen.

DR is functional, with a per-capita GDP nearly 5 times that of Haiti, while Haiti is not functional.
