If I’m reading the story correctly, the kid who was killed — who was white — started it by attacking some other kids — race unknown — with a screwdriver and then attempting to drive off in a car with some friends.
The three guys — black —who killed him with a machete were retaliating for the initial attack. Being modern kids, they naturally recorded their murder and showed off the recording at a party. Because stupid is as stupid does.
Was this generalized racial warfare or ongoing gang activity? Ah, Merry Olde England.
Anyhow, the white kid started it but made the mistake of bringing a screwdriver to a machete fight. Because stupid is as stupid does.
I doubt that the court officers propped up a corpse for sentencing, so...
