If you have actually studied how this situation evolved over the past few decades there are no pretzels. If your views are based on the huge volume of recent propaganda, then none of it makes any sense at all. Why??? Putin, and many other Russians, do not believe that Ukrainians are a separate people from Russians, viewing the Ukrainians as merely Russians with a strange dialect. Putin has stated this view many times in the past and repeated it in his interview with Tucker Carlson, stating that Ukrainian nationalism was in invention of the Poles. This idea is the real reason for the war. All else are just smokescreens.

I guess you have chosen to remain ignorant of the long running Putin covert and overt efforts to subvert “ethnic Russians” in the Donbas into “separatist” forces as well being the force organizaing and arming them; along with your pretense that that does not matter.
And I guess you think Ukraine, European and U.S. intelligence were all suppose to behave as if they were ignorant of all that as well.

2. Ignore that the present government was not the government in power in 2016;
3. And ignore Trump’s support for Ukraine after he was elected.

It is difficult to converse with someone who has no historical perspective... couldn't tell a Russian from a Ukrainian if their life depended on it, and does nothing but quote propaganda word for word.
