There is no adult in sight to intervene.

It qualifies as genius in certain, ah, communities.

Not only that, he was overheard deprecating the writings of Proust.

Naturally, violence was the only resort.

There was a school in DC that once attracted the best and brightest minds in the black community and competition was fierce for the few open slots each year. Then they decide that due to the new busing requirements that they would make it a neighborhood school. Immediately grades and expectations plummeted and it became just another failed school in DC.

The existential question, among many, is WHAT can the US do with all the fatherless kids in the US?

(1) Concentration Camp? (2) Deport to South Sea Island? (3)
Apply 50 lashes for assault on anybody, not going to school, not working, spitting on sidewalk?

I prefer # 3.

We have a new euphemism. Gifted and Talented.

Aka "teens" and "youths."

Exactly, who was driving the bus?

To be fair, if a person is driving the bus, the same person has a hard time breaking up disturbances. Buses, especially school buses, should have armed security.

I assume any adults around were afraid to intervene either for their personal safety or because the assailants belonged to a protected group.

Here is a long article that explains the history:

https://www.the74million.org/article/nycs-new-gifted-talented-admissions-bring-chaos-and-disregard-the-research/

Short version—the current mayor turned a previously solid program into a dumpster fire.

Democrats destroy everything they touch.

Without Democratic rule New York City could be the greatest city in the world.

My layman’s hunch is that the growth of AP courses and IB programs is linked to this problem. Heaven forbid that honors classes and gifted and talented programs not be correctly balanced on the intersectionality scale. AP rebranded the option as “requiring more work.” That seems to have worked for awhile, but recently the levelers have started coming for AP classes as well.

(4) Bring back the old Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

Pay the kids to labor at public works projects. And teach them a trade along the way.

Ah, but this will be riskier now than it was in the 1930s. Many urban kids today are rudderless, and violent. Anyway, the key is to pay them to learn a trade. Carpentry, plumbing, whatever.

You are correct, Tax-chick. I’m a retired urban school teacher. I know teachers who were injured while trying to break up a student fight (I was one of them). Some of those injuries were bad enough to be career-ending.

And I know teachers who had to defend themselves legally because they intervened. Two were accused of using excessive force. One was accused of inappropriate touching. The charges went nowhere. But they caused anguish to the teachers in the meantime.

It takes a hero (or maybe someone quite stupid) to break up a student fight these days. And not everyone is cut out to be a hero.

Mark Twain School?

Samuel Clemons was once a Confederate soldier. No wonder there are problems.
