Don’t grant Voting Rights until they have lived there for 10 years

I call them “Orange County Republicans” and as an ex-Californian living in North Idaho, we see the same behavior this article describes. We moved from Kootenai County to Boundary County because we saw the writing on the wall. Recent ex-Californians moving into Post Falls and Coeur d’Alene are voting for tax increases and justifying it by saying “It’s for the kids”. I blame it on the “Covid Rush”. It used to be that people slowly trickled into Idaho and unlearned their old thoughts and behaviors. That “localization” is no longer happening due to the volume of people (kind of like our southern border). A prime example is in driving behavior. So many California drivers arrived at once that they didn’t notice that they were not behaving like locals. We left California to get away from that behavior. That’s also why we left Kootenai County.

The $50 million net worth number for 2026 is stunning.

Anyone with successful small or medium sized businesses should be scampering out of the state now—to beat the rush!

Right, but most can’t do anything with it unless they leave the state...If they try to buy up within CA, it will cost dearly with taxes doubling, tripling and more.

Although they consider themselves conservative by the standards of the states they fled, they’re definitely liberal nest defecators when they get here.

So much for all the proclamations of those that extolled their conservative leanings over the last couple of years.

"A large percentage of police officers and firefighters are mostly conservative."

That is very true. Just because you work for a liberal State, doesn't mean you share the political beliefs of that State. I spent 25 years in uniform for NY State, and am no friggin' liberal. Most of the people I worked with were Republicans. Many of the guys I worked with owned personal weapons on their badges, and were big hunters.

Exactly—CA’s high real estate prices, high income taxes and now a potential exit tax for high net worth individuals are piling on reasons for folks to flee the state.

If they cash out now they are big winners.

If they wait a couple of years who knows....

You have to be very well off or wealthy to live there. That’s what gold plated government pensions can do.

Every retired cop and firefighter I know, and it's just a handful, have been granted large disability pensions on top of their standard pension. They are bringing in 6 figures even after taxes. None of them were injured on the job or have any significant limitations beyond what is typical for their age, and all retired before 60. Some still work. As far as I can tell, this is the norm.

These are largely people who claim to be conservative

Conservatives but relying on a leftist state to continue paying these government public retirees, many of which are receiving $10,000+ per month.

They know who butters their bread.

Although I’m ex-California in North Idaho, after I saw the behavior this article describes, I started advocating for 5 years. I also think we should only allow property owners to vote on property tax increases. Too many old folks on fixed incomes that have lived here their entire lives are going to get pushed out of their homes.

A large percentage of police officers and firefighters *think* they are conservative.

Maybe if there were no fires or crimes on their watch it would be ‘fair’. But .. .

I would agree to 5 years, but I don’t think anyone that doesn’t own property should be allowed to vote and certainly anyone who is a Public Charge shouldn’t be allowed to vote either.

A native Idahoan friend said that nearby Boise is the witness protection program capital of the US.

Here's another side to the story. I'm Idaho born and raised. But when I graduated college, got married and started a family, I couldn't find work that paid enough to survive. In those days you had to specialize in farming, ranching, the timber industry or mining to make it. So I found work out of state that paid more and eventually ended up in CA.

I'm conservative and have never belonged to a union. I invested in CA real estate and both my wife and I worked hard at our separate businesses. When retirement time came we found our home had tripled in value and our businesses were worth a substantial amount. We cashed out and moved to AZ. We're not on pensions. We've invested well and hope the Democrats don't inflate away the value of our remaining savings.

The moral of my story is that the Simplots, Idaho Power, the northern mining, ranching and timber interests and other entrenched corporations, exploited young workers and drove them out of state as they did me. They lost their brainpower and their own loyal conservatives. I don't feel a lot of sympathy for the state's current dilemma.
