Yes, if you are a Republican taking questions there will be Democrat plants and if you are a Democrat taking questions, there will be Republican plants.

Deal with that reality and learn to answer questions.

Logical person would have turned to the idiot who asked this and asked...is the end of the Civil War or the history to it....a top 1,000 priority to you?

The war ended 158 years ago....Republican leadership ensured the end. Blood from the northern states ensured the end.
Republican leadership ensured the slavery question ended forever. If you still linger in some 1860 mentality...I feel sorry for you and your kin-folks.

the Republican Party was founded in 1854 on an anti-slavery political platform.

It's hard to grasp the stupidity of the Republican party. Here they have a founding issue that could define the party and it's policies, and instead they have totally mishandled it for nearly 170 years. This idiot Haley is just the latest example of a Performance Clown, put in front of voters by donors and the Murdock's. I hope her answer hangs around her neck like an anchor.

The worst part is that they learn nothing. If it weren’t for desperate, largely ill-informed voters looking for an alternative to pure Marxism, the Republican Party would be a debating society limited to small stages at non-consequential think tanks.

Their (GOP Establishment) role is to play The Washington Generals to the Democrats’ Harlem Globetrotters

To give the illusion of opposition when it’s just a rigged game

Makes the voters believe that they actually have “a choice”

John McCain was all against Obamacare.....until he voted to keep it going and the mask was off (as expected)

The Civil War was about secession.
Secession was about slavery.

"I think it was a plant as well. I’m no Haley fan but to whine that she didn’t mention slavery is race baiting imo."

Fighting to end slavery didn't become an issue until later in the war. If it had been an issue from the beginning, it wouldn't have taken Lincoln until 1863 to authorize the formation of the first two black regiments in the north, the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Regiments. Yes, there were contraband regiments organized in the South using freed slaves. The 54th and 55th consisted mostly of free men, who had been born in the North. But some of the men who joined those two units were escaped slaves, and they had to lie, and claim they were free, when they took the oath to enlist.

If you asked the men in uniform why they were fighting back then, the Union men would say "to hold the Union together." The Confederate men would say: "States' Rights."

The following letter was widely published in several of the newspapers of New York State in late 1864. It was discovered in the 10/15/1864 issue of the Poughkeepsie Telegraph:

A Union Soldier's Letter

We have been favored by an old resident of Mabbettsville, in this county with the following interesting letter written to him by a nephew in the army, dated Morris Island, S.C., September 24, 1864:

Dear Uncle:--Your good advice I will try and follow. I tell you, George B. McClellan is the only man, that can carry the old ship of State safely through; already we are drifting near the rock that will submerge the noble ship, and we need a man at the helm that will take her out into the broad ocean and guide her toward and into the port of Peace. I say there is too much negro about this matter; only look at the thousands of valuable lives that have been sacrificed for the black man, but my opinion is the South are not fighting for slavery now, but for their honor; but the present administration are continually harping on the negro. They say we are determined to break the bonds of every slave--or disunion God forbid I should ever have those feelings. No, no. The Union must and shall be preserved. Let the negro go. The white man must rule and reign.

The noble and tried patriot to-day stands before the American people for the high position of President of these United States. His enemies will ask you what he has ever done to entitle him to occupy the presidential chair? He has done much. Why did he not do more? Simply because he was never supported by the Administration as he should have been; troops were withheld from him, when he called loudly for them. The great secret was, he was too popular with the people and soldier. The Republicans were afraid of him. But thank God he is as much beloved to-day as ever.

The soldiers love him, and when their votes are counted you will find we will roll-up such a majority for General George B. McClellan that will astonish the country. He is our choice, and if you could have witnessed as I did the scene that transpired when he was relieved from command, it would have made your heart (though it were adament) melt to see the tears trickle down the cheek of the war worn veteran and the raw recruit when the news reached them, but I trust the day of deliverance is at hand.

Dear Uncle, though you may have never engaged in politics before in your life, I implore you to put your shoulder to the wheel, and every chance you have don't neglect the opportunity of urging the claim of Little Mac upon your friends. Please tell them to stand by him. I hope Old Duchess [county] will roll up a large majority for him. I must close as it is near 10 o'clock at night. Please write me a few lines. Your nephew,

Edwin A. Hoag.

"Correspondence from Union troops was very clear what they believed they were fighting for: 'Preserve the Union'."

Exactly. See the 1864 letter I posted at #34 on this thread.

"It doesn’t matter if someone is a plant or not, you can either answer the question or you can’t."

I don't care for Nikki Haley one bit, but there are many reasons given as to why the war started. Historians have been arguing about them for decades, and will continue to do so. No matter what answer she gave, the media would have attacked her, unless she'd said slavery. Slavery wasn't the initial reason the war started, although the left would like it to have been. They will push that claim, so they can label someone a racist, when they don't answer that question, the way they demand they should.

What does the CW have to do with anything?

You would be surprised at how much the civil war still affects our lives. Roe v Wade was a consequence of the civil war. Gay marriage was another. Banning prayer in Schools was another. Anchor babies is another.

All these things were consequences of the civil war.

Your comment may be the correct answer to a Political Science final exam question.

The problem is that the troops who actually fought on the ground could not care less about slavery or the “black issue”.

If Lincoln had said in 1861 “we are fighting a war to end slavery” he would have had to raise an army to kidnap civilians to fight the war.

"Republican leadership"

We sure could use some of that in Congress these days.

“I’ve never understood this argument.”

It’s a can’t win question like, “Do you only beat your wife on Tuesdays.” And there is no answer to that question that can’t be manipulated.

Liberals from the MSM get “what’s your favorite color,” while conservatives get unanswerable questions just to dirty them in the eyes of the voters. And if the liberals fear you enough, they start a smear campaign like the one they have done on Trump for the last eight years at least with delving into his private life and going after his family without anything but opinions. That’s how liberal politics is done. The art of misdirection. Read Alinsky.
