Wow, Boston musta gone light in the loafers or something as schools used to only be closed if buried by feet of snow. People were used to -23 degrees and worse. Heck, I remeber ice fishing at -35 with winds whipping about 20 mph or so, and working on roofs at -30 below, again with wind chills making it even colder. And while -35 (or around -50 0r so due to,wind chill) was cold but bearable, folks in alaska and such scoff at such balmy temperatures. I wonder how cold it would have to get in Alaska to close down school for the day?

Yes, it was unusually warm this Christmas in the Peoples Republic of Minnesota setting new record highs. Even our local TV weather people noted that there were similar record warm days several times in years past. Old timers including myself also remember there were similarly warm early winters in years past and often followed by brutal cold and snow. I’m not putting away my down parka or planting palm trees at our cabin in northern Minnesota just yet.
so do we use more fossil fuels now?
Yes, I remember one Christmas about 30 years ago when it was very warm on Christmas Day and one a few years before when it was extremely cold..................
