They have oil and some gold, but it always seems their people are desperately poor and without much formal education.

starting around 2004-2005, Israel starting relying more and more on technology to guard that border with Gaza...remote cameras, sensors and even remote machine guns. They pulled actual soldiers off that border as a result. Hamas had years to study their security set up...and sure enough, they got to the point that they used cheap drones to nullify the cellular “signals” and jammed the whole thing on October 7th....they easily breached the security fences all along the border and Israel had no idea it was even happening. The few bases there were caught off guard...some soldiers actually killed while they slept.
