Briefly, “progressive” doesn't mean what those who self-identify as this think it means. As it stands, I would define a “progressive” as a cynic who is devoid of realism but nonetheless convinced of the superiority of their beliefs and opinions, and who supports governance by those they believe to be ‘elite’.
Conversely, I would define a true conservative as a humble and optimistic realist who values individuality and government by the people for the people.
Although unclear to too many Americans of Jewish heritage, Hitler belongs in the first group. Fascism and progressivism are ideological cousins.
