But according to the international law, if you claim asylum, you have to claim it in the first country where it is safe for you to do it. (e.g. if you cross from North Korea to China, it is NOT safe to claim asylum in China, so you are allowed to proceed to e.g. Mongolia)
Since Mexico is safe country, all those people should claim their asylum in Mexico, or Guatemala or Ecuador or ...
Unless they are persecuted Mexican citizens, they have no right to cross the border and claim asylum in the US.
Even in the middle of cold war, when being returned to USSR was almost a death sentence, countries in the West did exactly that, if they sensed that the refugee is shopping around for the asylum country!
