Our immigration system is based on sponsorship of close relatives, without regard to skills or wealth.

We must select immigrants based on useful skills in American economy or $10 million brought to invest in USA.

Your parents stayed in India? That’s certainly not the norm. There has been a massive influx of Indians in my area in the last 5-8 years, and it seems a significant percentage of whom are elderly.

My sister brought over our mother because mother was 75 and no one was looking after her in India. She lived to age 103 in USA with loving care by my older sister.

Yes, because elderly immigrants are paid supplemental social security. This is crazy to pay people who never paid social security taxes.

Western Europe is developed. Even if we were to recruit immigrants from Europe, not many would accept our invitation. Why would they leave their home to a strange country far away from their family and friends?

The quota system was abolished, but as you say, "family reunification" became a stated policy goal. This necessarily would contribute to increased immigration from places people are desperate to leave.

I do not believe immigration should be intended to alleviate someone's material discomfort.

That is not true. I go to Western Europe often on business, and the sense of contempt and disdain they have for America is quite stunning. They have absorbed a very negative stereotype image of America over the past couple of decades beginning with the Iraq war and the Bush years.

But Eastern Europe is another matter.
