That truly is amazing. He was incredible and was the indispensable man for his time. And he wasn’t wrong in evaluating Soviets the way he did.
But face it, he was a patrician elitist follower of basic pagan mysticism and reincarnation.
But as you pointed out, so many great men suffer from one common flaw. That is our childish expectation that a great General, politician, racecar driver, test pilot, chef, cop, or whatever also be an across the board perfect renaissance man. It’s unrealistic and always disappoints. In truth, these men who do great things are normal men, and they rose above everyone else for one spectacular task or capability. But outside that, they are otherwise normal. You gotta appreciate these greats for what they did and leave it there. They aren’t some kind of oracle otherwise. Guy Gabaldon is another example... Pied Piper of Saipan.
Or as Pappy Boyington put it; Show me a hero, and I’ll show you a bum.
We should appreciate those guys for their great ability or act, and leave it there.
Patton waged war against US WWI veterans (the “Bonus Army”). His words have no meaning or credibility for me.
