If you read the neocon opinion journals (and I do), they are facing defeat in Ukraine and their fantasy plan is to send in “NATO” to not only push the Russians out of the Ukraine but then to go all the way to Moscow and dissolve the Russian Federation into mini- and micro-states, easily ruled by neoliberal institutions.
For this, they are going to need much larger US ground forces.
And for that, they are going to need a draft.
2 year enlistments in the infantry and non skilled jobs where no significant training is required. Make it worth their while by giving 401k bonuses after a year. An up-to 90 day early release if it coincides with a community college/trade school start.
18/19 year-olds could choose between this military jump-start in life or choose a community college set up on the trimester system-no long summer vacations. A skilled trade can be taught in the military with a longer commitment. This option could compete with McJobs, the only option out there. Young folks would be ‘doing something’ rather than lounge around not knowing what to do with themselves.
It starts with raising the age of adulthood to 20. No more voting for 18/19 year-olds EXCEPT those serving in the military. It takes away the ‘if they’re old enough to fight’ argument.
Young folks have gotta get on with their lives. I’ve also suggested allowing 16 year-olds to take and pass the GED and then deal with his/her options. And to think the rats solution is to allow 16 year-olds to vote. In my way they’d earn their way to adulthood.
Why would they even want to work for citizenship these days? To get the opportunity to pay taxes?
I turned 18 in May 1968. I had eight years of deferments II-S and then II-H for medical school.
In exchange for the II-H, I was draft-eligible until age 42.
Looking back on it, the student deferment for college was corrupt and should never have been allowed.
That’s fine with me. I went through basic training for correctional officers at age 48...fire arms, unarmed self-defense, riot batons, etc. Wish I’d could have done it 30 years earlier. It developed something inside me that I didn’t know needed developing.

You think morale is low now? Force people into the military and then have a drag queen order them to take an experimental vaccine. It could happen.
Sounds like a great student loan forgiveness plan, kind of a GI bill in reverse. One year for every $10K of debt.
And stop putting females in the military.
The student deferment for college is a large part of how we wound up with the Left controlling the university system.
I’m good with that. At least not in combat arms, front line positions. Support roles similar to WWII era WACs, OK.
