I feel sorry for the veterans that went off to serve their country when they were young and came back with severe mental and physical problems. Some of them were in such pain that they have no choice but to use the drugs and become addicts.
There are others that smelled turpentine when they were teenagers and fried their brains. I remember seeing kids in alleys with spray cans and they would be smelling that shit. I remember a kid that I saw on the floor and recognized him from grammar school. I could not understand how he ended up that way. But there he was. I figured he was probably dead or would soon be. I must admit it made an impression on me seeing him like that and I was a teenager at the time.
How right you were.
More of a case of self inflicted UNnatural selection.
Same here. At MCRD from Feb 2 - May 9, 1973 and then to 29 Palms after my 10 days leave, until December 1973. I was also there from May 1983 to September 1986 going to college. It was still livable then. Last time I spent any time there was in San Francisco for six weeks in November-December 1989. Even back then Frisco was a nice place. But now, it's just a hellhole. I go there occasionally for a day or two to visit my daughter and her family, but it's changed for the worse in ways unimaginable just a decade or two ago. Semper Fi.
That’s the same time I was at 29 Palms! I was in Basic Electronics school!..................
I hate when that happens.
Ah YES... "the Lord works in mysterious ways"
Drug use/abuse is a CHOICE. Bad choices can have bad consequences. Users dying culls the gene pool of undesirables.
They have much different chemical structures however. Tranq (xylazine) used for veterinary sedation. Pure krokodil is desomorphine...an opiate derivative. Desomorphine was legally used in some European countries for a while. Krokodil is easily synthesized from codeine, and doesn’t require a sophisticated chemical lab. Different chemicals canlead to similar effects in addicted people.
Truly an ever changing human failure and tragedy.
Me too! Are you in this picture?
No, I was in the Basic Electronics Course, July - December, and at the end of December was sent to MCB Albany Georgia for Test Instrument Repair School.......................
Also did all the stupid stuff like Guard Duty and Raking the sand!.................
AFAIK, We never had any official pictures taken..................
After BEC I did another eight weeks there in Telephone Switchboard Repair Course, so I also left in December. Then off to Fort Monmouth, NJ for Dial Central Office Installer Repairman school.
After Albany, I went to my permanent base, Camp Lejeune, for a couple of months then they sent me to Lowry AFB DENVER for Calibration School! Had a blast!.....
The first 18 months I was in schools!..............
My previous post should have included the date for my Haight-Ashbury visit. It was 1966.
The first 18 months I was in schools!..............
Same here. Joined Feb 1, 73 and finished last school on Aug 9, 74. After that, spent a year at Camp Lejeune, two years at El Toro and a year on Okinawa. Finished my last four months at Pendleton and got out. But then I did almost 26 in the Guard, 17 years of that as a C-130 loadmaster. Now that was a blast. Got paid to travel all over the world.
