At the turn of the last century, lynching of blacks were commonplace, with photos of the grisly event, as well as postcards. There was a party atmosphere, with gruesome "souvenirs" taken. Most of these atrocities occurred in what was called the Solid South. The states of the Old Confederacy were so named because they were solidly Democrat from 1877 to 1952 at the Presidential level and into the 1980s and 1990s at the state and local level.

That Till boy was an urban "youth" from Chicago. He did not respect the culture and mores of rural Mississippi. Had he comported himself respectfully he would not have gotten into trouble.
Even today, if a white person were to visit the Chicago jungle, he would suffer the same fate. The Negro culture demands homage. They do not tolerate what they see as "disrespect". Unfortunately disrespect is what Till brought with him on his visit to Mississippi.
