“before it took an unexpected turn to the north.”
Well, golly!

As the balloon hovered over the Big Sky State on Feb. 1, it was spotted by civilians. "I'm sorry, Xi! Everything was going fine until some civilians saw it!"
"But don't worry, I won't do anything until its mission is completed!"

Oh yes, the Chinese spy balloon was blown off course.
In fact, it was blown so far off course that it ended up being maneuvered directly over our ballistic missile sites and strategic air force bases in Montana.
Amazing how that happens.

So did China take their own balloon on the loose down? Did they notify all the nations in the world that can track such? Did they notify the world air traffic systems that there is a very, very large balloon that they had lost control of?

Before reaching that conclusion, an analysis of wind currents must be accomplished.
Although the vessel in question was in fact a blimp with some directional control and not a balloon, I question the maneuverability.
It was said to be headed for Guam but apparently never got there. For China, Guam would be more important than Montana

There have been published notations to that effect. The definitions are the citation
A balloon has no guidance and is an envelope containing lighter than air gasses. They are generally spherical or tear drop shaped
A blimp is also an envelope containing lighter than air gasses, in this instance a spherical envelope that has some directional control. Traditional American blimps are horizontally oriented cylinders.

“A senior US official told the Washington Post”
ALL BS!

They are steered by changing altitude to follow the wind currents. It is actually done that way.

Facts are not based upon propaganda.
I dispute that it was a ‘blimp’.
You may make that claim, but it is FAR from factual.

It flew over Guam, Hawaii, Alaska, and across the Contiguous US and just
happened to be over US military bases at every turn?
Color me skeptical.

China does not need an ISR balloon to get a survey of Guam.

I also dispute that labeling ‘as a fact’ is trivial.
Opinion is not fact.

I suspected that we were being lied to as soon as we couldn’t shoot it down over land (’empty’ Montana and the Dakotas, no less) out of concern for persons and property on the ground.
If that were the concern, we would ban all over-land aircraft, which can fall from the sky on a non-trivial frequency.
