There are other ways to be subdued than invasion.
Take a look around, China is doing a fantastic job of subjugation, mainly because younger Americans have no ability to strategize.
China has bought our politicians, many of our major sources of resources, and is seeking to control the food supply. You think a few empty shelves during Covid was inconvenient, just wait until you cannot get certain natural resources.

Yes. They were uninhabited before discovery by Europeans. That makes Europeans the “native Hawaiians” of Diego Garcia, and the imported plantation workers and their progeny the “haoles”.

That all goes back to a single question: Why do we even trade with China? For cheap goods? We can get that from here, Central America, or any number of other places.

They’re inside already. Canada and the US are under their thumb already.

Diego Garcia can best be described as a city full of skyscrapers, but they are all underground. There is massive ammunition storage there, much of which is 500lb iron bombs.

Ironically, most of the “old ammo” was used in Gulf War I and II. It was *supposed* to have been enough ammo to attack the lower third of the Soviet Union. Obviously they vastly underestimated their needs.

Since then, the resupply mission has been ongoing. Quietly, ship after ship has slowly restocked them.

The best bet for the US is a double one. First a forcible sale or 100 year lease of the island itself, and second, a prohibition against any of the other islands being used by the Chinese or Russians, for obvious reasons.

"U.S. should accept that its Indian Ocean base belongs to Africa"

...and that Africa belongs to China?

From what I understand reading its history, no nation has legal claim to the islands. Therefore the legal inhabitants of the islands should decide who they want. Do you agree??

So why does Argentina claim the Falklands? No one there when the Lymies arrived.

“.So why does Argentina claim the Falklands? No one there when the Lymies arrived..”

Probably its proximity. There is no nation close to Diego Garcia.

“It isn’t strategic because we made it that way, it is strategic because of geography and the present state of technology.”

Given the time from which the U.S. facilities there were established - 1977 - and changes to technology and other military means since then, including the establishment &/or growth of other U.S. overseas bases, it is not unreasonable to ask if the base remains essential to U.S. operations

See link.
“In 1965 it was separated from Mauritius as part of the newly created British Indian Ocean Territory. The production of copra from coconut palms was the only economic activity until the early 1970s, when the last of the plantation workers and their families were removed—mostly to Mauritius, but smaller numbers went to Seychelles and Great Britain. This was done to enable the development of U.S. military facilities established in accordance with an agreement between the United States and the United Kingdom.”

I remember watching a news report showing the “natives” protesting, probably thirty years ago. This could have been resolved with payments of “reparations” back then, but it was in the interests of America’s enemies to keep it in the forefront, so probably no resolution other than the US moving off would be acceptable. Trust me, if the US gives up control and it goes back to the natives the Chinese will be there so fast you’d hear the sonic boom.

Try to explain that to the “if I can’t see it from my porch, it’s not a threat to me” faction here on FR.

There is supposedly an oil field between Argentina and the Faulklands. The generals thought they could make themselves wealthy if they controlled the economic zone.

The U.K. is under great political and legal pressure to decolonize

From who? China?

The UK could give the US a 99 year sale/lease on the Falklands. The US could then turn it over to Argentina in the end. Maintaining the islands so far away is too expensive for the Brits. Save face and it becomes a win win win. Argentina-that’s the best you can get.

The US could then turn it into a penal colony with illegal immigrants, staffed by Argentines. Plenty of sex and food available with all the sheep there.

The Falklands is economically self sufficient via fishing licences and sheep farming, and contributes to the garrison there, and the island is used as a training base.

And the trouble with any sort of deal that does not involve Britain retaining control of the islands is because that is not what the people there want.

1982(83?)-The final bill for the rescue came to $half a million per resident. Worth it? Now the Brits have cut back on defense to where they could not pull off another rescue mission. The US would not allow an attack on the mainland. Should have done it anyway-send a message.

There aren’t enough fish there to pay the total bill.
