We tried to but they got scammed out of it by a fake indian call center.
Or why have a base at all? We are basically un-invadable and cannot be subdued in any sense with a nuclear deterrent and an armed populace. It’s the same reason China, India, Russia, etc cannot be invaded and subdued. It’s a zero sum game and we are all playing like it is WWII. If we closed just 1/2 to 3/4 of out overseas bases and minded our own business we could take care of some of this debt, fix our social safety string, and in the long run reduce taxes and the MIC.
Astonishing. The islands are 2,200 miles from Mauritius, and were completely uninhabited before the French claimed them. France imported some laborers, who became the “Chagossians.” The U.K. received the islands from France during the post-Napoleonic peace talks.
You can bet the “ decolization” movement is financed by China, Russia, or Iran.
Africa who? It’s an enormous place.
For proof, just look up the names Alvin Bragg, Letitia James and Eric Adams.
Trade routes have to be protected, or else those who control them will control us.
Well my thoughts on trade with China are pretty well known. As long as we can hit Australia, Korea, and Japan in the Pacific and make Europe, South America, and Africa from the east coast we are fine. After cutting trade off from China (much like we did with the USSR) the ‘Chinese Hegemony’ problem takes care of itself. They can join the civilized world and follow the rules or go back to eating each other like before Nixon’s Folly. Don’t say it can’t be done. There is plenty of cheap labor just south of here that would gladly do those jobs.
In 1982 I worked on a tanker carrying JP-5 that was stationed in Diego Garcia, aka Fantasy Island. It was a merchant ship under charter to the U.S. Navy. Every morning the local TV station played the British National Anthem and then ours!
800 people lived there. They were removed.
“All your base are belong to us.”
I don’t claim to be a global military expert by any means, but I was on a Navy supply ship for 2 Western Pacific cruises. Based on the number of times we visited Diego Garcia to pick up supplies and personnel to deliver to the carrier groups it appeared to be extremely strategic, and it has grown significantly since I was there. If we give it up it will be another idiotic decision by whoever is running the country.
If we don’t control air and sea, someone else will control our access to resources. Which other nation would you prefer to have control over our supply lines?
Good point.
It isn’t strategic because we made it that way, it is strategic because of geography and the present state of technology.
What makes you think it ever had natives, and that the natives were moved off?
What did the natives, if any, call themselves? Just asking because someone else said the place was uninhabited before the French showed up.
So you want China to be closer to our Eastern states?
I know someone who was stationed there. It wasn’t a very good assignment as best I can tell.
