Journalists are generally protected from revealing their sources in matters of public interest (see the "Pentagon Papers" case for a good example of this).
However, there is admittedly a major gray area when it comes to journalists covering stories involving crimes. Imagine if you were the victim of a crime, and the perpetrator contacted a journalist to give his side of the story. Maybe I'm in a minority here, but it seems like there's no way in hell that journalist should be allowed to shield the identity of the criminal just because of some bogus First Amendment protection.
I watched that this morning. Bannon’s rant was epic and I wholeheartedly agreed with every word he said. He was POed!

That might hold water if the investigators/prosecutors of the criminal act were the ones seeking the name of the source who revealed the criminal but in this case it's the criminal who is suing the journalists for defamation of character that got the journalists jailed.
Both Bannon and the journalist's lawyer say they have never heard of anyone being jailed in a civil suit for defamation before.

So every person ratted out by an undercover spy can sue to find who revealed verified information.
