I did Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Monitoring in the USAF.
You made it in time before the cessation of above ground testing...

My co-workers in San Diego did lots of testing in Nevada. By the time I joined them in 1991, most of the work transitioned to modeling on a Cray. Some of the models ran just as fast on an HP PA UNIX workstation, so we saved some money on the Cray account. The models were within 1% of measured, so less trouble than setting up devices and sensors.

"I could absolutely live in Japan. Spent many years there and have friends I am so close to we consider each other family. Just before COVID myself and a friend were looking at an old home for sale in a village near Hiroshima. I prefer rural Japan, I like the area around Yamaguchi Prefecture on the Inland Sea side of the island.
Unlike Hawaii, in Japan I went to a 7-11 at 1 am on a balmy night. Ordered some yakitori and a coffee then relaxed with friends at tables outside the 7-11 until 3 am."

I totally understand. I lived there 21 years, and the friends you make is unexplainable, and the best way to describe it is like family (they are the only family I have).
I miss it so much, but now that I am disabled, I would not be able to live there since I would be unable to have a job there anymore.

I've lived in the countryside, and smack dab in the middle of Tokyo and Kyoto.
Didn't care too much about Tokyo, but the originality of Kyoto, even in the middle of it (Gion Shijo Station was nearest to where I lived in Kyoto), was beautiful.
Nowhere in the USA can match the cleanliness, friendliness, or politeness of anywhere in Japan.

Oh I don’t know about that.....plenty of rural American folks still conduct themselves like you described.

They changed their laws on immigration which is why we looked at a house.
