“Hispanics” are “Caucasians” or a mixture of races in the case of people from Latin America. It makes me cringe when people in ‘Murica say things like “Caucasian or Hispanic.” 😂
Why does it make you cringe?
Those options are on applications. Which was always the purpose of discussion when using those terms. So, these are real life practical terms, hence the discussions with my mother.
Because when one uses “Caucasian” in a racial sense, the comparable terms are Negroid, Melanesian, Mongol/Asian, etc. “Hispanic” in such a context is a subset of “Caucasian.” The archaic term “Caucasian” covers everyone from Portugal to Norther India. Using the terms “Hispanic” and “Caucasian” as opposing terms makes as much sense as saying “Polish” and “Caucasian.”
Understood. But, those are the options on applications and why I was confused.
“Murca” invented the asinine term “Hispanic” as an affirmative action category in the 1970s. A person of European ancestry from Latin America is a white person. Case closed.
I’m not arguing with you. WTH! Calm down. I’m discussing my situation.
And what’s up with ‘Murica. You dislike this country ?
Back in the 1970s, the euphemism of the day for Hispanics was “Spanish Surnamed Americans.” I had a roommate in college that got a full ride scholarship that was only available to Spanish Surnamed Americans. His last name was Sanchez.
He was Irish with red hair and freckles and could not go outside for more than 15 minutes without getting sunburned. In the 1800s, his great-great-great-grandfather immigrated to Ireland from Spain.
The first time I ever heard of a “White Hispanic” was when the media was trying to paint George Zimmerman as a racist white guy who shot a poor black teenager for no reason. If he had been named Zapata instead of Zimmerman no one would have ever heard of him.
Most Hispanics that I know want to be referred to as Hispanics so I do. Occasionally I will run into someone who wants to be called a Latino. I am fine either way. I have never met anyone who wants to be called a “Latinx.” It is a made up word used only be rich white liberals, mostly academics.
Mrs Clemenza is “Hispanic” of Spanish, Portuguese, West African, and Taino/Carib ancestry so she is a non-white Hispanic. Ricky Martin, who hails from the same island as my in-laws, is of Spanish, Italian, and Corsican ancestry, so he is a true “white Hispanic” unlike Mr. Zimmerman.
As it says on the US census, “Hispanics may be of ANY race.”
A person of Italian ancestry from Argentina, aka half the population of that country, comes to the US and is a “minority.” His cousin with the same DNA but whose grandparents didn’t stop in South America along the way is “white.”
Not as annoying as being one of seven countries on earth that allows abortion up to birth but annoying nonetheless. 😂
Caruso could have claimed that he is black. Hannibal and his boys spent a lot of time in Italy. All ya need is one drop of black blood.
He better not talk like that in Brooklyn!
Anyone that knows anything about Italy, knows that they are a diverse people. From the light skinned northern Italians to the darker skinned Sicilians. This clown should have said that he was an American of Italian descent.
So is he Latinx?
Amusing point.
They contributed to the language, too. Some northern Italians speak with a German accent. I knew one who always said "ja" for "yes."
Many similarities exist between Italian and Spanish words and names. Sometimes people assume I’m Spanish when they see my last name. I look plain ol’ white and burn in the sun, so sometimes my name causes confusion. I’ve never checked-off “Hispanic,” but if I did, I could get away with it, too.
Neither is Hispanic.🤔
