Spanish are officially white.

Though, I highly suspect there is alot of Moslem Arab mixed in from the occupation. Hence the tendency for “olive” skin and universally dark hair. And hence, the extra reinforcement of similar when mixed with (allegedly yellow) indigenous South American peoples.

I hear Arabs are basically white, also, but they seemed to go with a certain ethnic physical stamp that doesn’t vary much.

What, because Italian is a Latin/Romance language?

Then I guess the French and Romanians aren’t white either!

Of course, most immigrants who grew up speaking Spanish or Portuguese describe themselves as “white” for the purposes of the US census.

The Italian penninsula had quite a mix, going back to ancient times.

The south had a lot of Greek colonies, but the countryside was populated by Italic peoples. Its telling that the native languages that emerged there, eventually, were of Italic origin (like Sicilian), and not Greek.

There are the weird non-Indo European Etruscans.

The North of Italy had a strong Celtic influence, being the native land of various Celtic tribes, deadly enemies of early Rome.

And then there were various Germanic peoples, Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Lombards, that settled all over the penninsula after the fall of Rome.

And Albanians/Illyrians along the Adriatic, and that settlement is also ancient.

Add Arabs/Levantines from the Muslim invasions. They held Sicily and parts of Southern Italy for over 200 years.

And then there were the Normans...

It just goes on and on.

I never said it was or wasn’t. Bottom line, look at the designations and how they are derived. Arbitrary in many cases.

I have met a few people of Irish descent who said they were Irish, not White. More a matter of attitude vs biology.

A hundred or so years ago, the Irish in this country were not considered white. They were highly discriminated against. Just shows how artificial race really is.

In the US one enters an ethnic blender. Our kids are, as best we can tell based on Ancestry.com and genealogy...

60% Spanish (predominantly Basque), 25% American Anglo-Dutch-French mutt (wife and daughter qualify for the DAR), 12.5% Mexican Indian and 2.5% Filipino.

They were always “white” for official purposes, and they look white.

Spanish physiognomy is quite diverse. And it is also regionally varied.

Having been in many countries though ...

Leaving aside the effects of recent immigration -

It is not at all nationally distinctive, anywhere. Given a random sample of Spanish people it would be rather difficult to distinguish them from a similarly random sample of French or Italians or Portuguese. Or even British. With a large sample one could get somewhere with analyses of statistical distribution.

The “darkest” subset of the Spanish, in my experience, aren’t the “native” Andalusians (with the most “Moorish” blood), but the gypsies, the gitanos.

And those people have been in Spain for 700 years.

Yes indeed. Just as with Southern Italians vs central northern Italians , the complexions of Spaniards in the south tend to be darker. In the case of Spain there’s a lot of history from the Berber’s /Moroccan’s. I love that style.

Most all of my mom’s family is/was rooted in central Spain - All of them are average completion for Caucasian. And 1/2 are blue or green eyed. I always find it interesting when people are surprised to know where I’m from because I don’t look like what they expect.

It's not about olive oil, it's about who the next-door neighbors were. In northern Italy, Switzerland, Austria, France and Slovenia all share a border with Italy. Is it any surprise that northern Italians often have blond hair and blue eyes? Traders from Africa and the Middle East contributed to the darker complexions and dark hair/eyes that is found along the coast and in Southern Italy.

The only true Latinos (really Latini) are Italians, which I always like to remind my Puerto Rican wife.

Actually about half of Argentina’s population is of Italian ancestry and their are more people of Italian ancestry in Brazil than in the United States.

Nope that would be Benjamin Cardozo (Sephardic Jewish - a Semite with a Latin decanted mother tongue).
