Just as French are Latin.

And of course, Spanish, from whom all this travesty south derives.

Being from Spain, my mom made it clear we were white/Caucasian. Not Hispanic. I found it confusing by American standards and because of the dictionary’s definition of Hispanic . But, my mom made it clear. We were Caucasian. I suppose Mom knew best.

Hahaha, that is funny. He should have called himself the real Latin.

True enough, you can’t get more ‘Latino’ than an Italian.

But when it comes to race, we all dance around the reality and logic of the situation. ‘African-American’ means people descended from sub-Saharan Africans, but most decidedly not people from Mediterranean Africa nor especially not white people from South Africa like Elon Musk.

‘Black’ only refers again to people descended from Sub-Saharan Africans. People from India or the South Pacific may be much blacker, but they don’t count as ‘black’. Barack Obama is half-white, but he is ‘black’.

So much time, trouble and money has been expended to divide us on the basis of ‘race’. Even the reporter, Telemundo anchor Dunia Elvir made the point that the mayor race in L.A. is all about race—and seem to want to make the point that someone from Latin America isn’t included.

No, it’s based mostly on the language, not the peoples.

And I’m quite positive based on looks, manner, principles, etc, “Italians” as usually perceived are not the same as Romans. Likely more Greeks as they were moving into the Italian peninsula.

I guess you didn't see this episode:

Ariel: You ever heard of the Masada? For two years, 900 Jews held their own against 15,000 Roman soldiers. They chose death before enslavement. The Romans? Where are they now?

Tony Soprano: You're looking at them, a**hole.

Sicilians are Africans according to Quentin Tarantino. He’s Eyetalian, so there’s that.

“Latin America” refers to the Spanish-Portuguese combo that created all those countries. Both Spanish and Portuguese being Latin derived languages. A better name, probably, would be Iberian America. There was little Italian or French participation in the settlement of South-Central America, Mexico or the Caribbean.

Not really. They are part of the white race. Period.

“Latino” isn’t really a race, though we may think so - and that would likely be closer related to the yellow race.

Mine was partly tongue-in-cheek.

If Italians can claim to be “Latino”, then French can, too.

It’s all silly.

My best friend growing up (and to this day) is Sicilian by heritage. Her father was directed to sit in the back of the bus in DC during segregation.

Garcetti managed to be Italian, Jewish, and Mexican at the same time. Did Whiteness or non-Whiteness come up when he ran for office?

It is silly. I think it’s a Spanish pride thing. So, would you consider Spaniards to be Caucasian or Hispanic?

Don’t doubt it. I grew up Jersey. Always joked about it with my friends. My old girlfriend is American Sicilian. Still friends to this day.

And that’s the interesting thing. “Latins” originally referred to the ancient Romans. So Tony Soprano was correct in his comment.

But for some reason the term now refers to folks of Hispanic decent. I don’t get that. And I’m too lazy to look up an explanation.
