Fauci is still working at NIH, at the highest salary in these States feral government. He is just officially not in charge as director. Nothing operationally will change unless his new director makes different decisions, and that would result in the new director’s invitation to resign.

It certainly makes financial sense. By resigning before the end of the year, Fauci will get the projected 2023 COLA increase for SS and federal pensions of 9% to 10%. Big bucks for a guy who will get a $320K pension.
