They are in operation on video.

Does anybody have missiles with that tech? I just don’t find this hypersonic missile talk very credible.

I seriously would like to know. By your screen name you would have way more insight than I do. Thanks.

The SR-71 Blackbird, the ONLY jet in the world (and the fastest) to use RamJet Engines.

Officially, it went MACH 3. Unofficially, it went MACH 5.
It made it from New York to London in less than 2 hours.

If I remember right, it was blueprint (on the table) around 1956-1957.
Prototype (A-12, smaller version of the RS-71, which because of a typo, became the SR-71) around 1960, and I think production started around 1962-1964.

NO manned jet anywhere in the world has been able to get close to its power (powered by the 2 ramjets).

At full speed, the cones at the front of the engine are fully extended, meaning very little air getting into the engine, but at that speed, the compression is so great, that the SR-71 is only using 30% of its fuel (Liquid Oxygen Gel).

That’s what I remember, anyway.

“They are in operation on video.”

Unfortunately for the US, we were too busy celebrating the ‘peace dividend’ to notice that Russia and China were developing hypersonics. It was reported here, the Washington Times was basically reporting play-by-play. We just ignored it, figuring they were useless because we had finally reach “The End of History”.

And then the mercenaries in far-Western Ukraine got pummeled by Russian hypersonics, and we finally noticed them, since we weren’t even able to track them, much less defend against them (I suspect the tracking software we used excluded objects moving that fast as non-credible - probably modified by now).

...based on their capacity to carry the fuel.

That is the factor that determines range, and you got it yourself, you're catching on!

I’ve never seen a missile travel at mach 5-10 or anything close

Every missile that takes something into orbit travels at the equivalent of about Mach 25.

THe Tomcat could aquire 6 enemies on radar and fire on all of them simultaneously, at a range of 150 miles.

Max range was 115 miles, not 150. Used twice, not fired in batches, except perhaps on some training range.

“Despite the much-vaunted capabilities, the Phoenix was rarely used in combat, with only two confirmed launches and no confirmed targets destroyed in US Navy service.” - wiki

Poor reference but the only one I could find in a quick search.

I saw it on the deck of the Intrepid in NY. As I recall it leaked 1/3 of its fuel before the heat from its speed expanded enough to seal its joints.

An amazing craft.

The Concorde did US to London in under three hours. My buddy flew on one of the last flights. He said he was basically in space and could see the curvature of the Earth. Said it was super uncomfortable and devoid of any amenities. He was a first class guy and wasn’t a fan. Kept asking for champaign and caviar...lol.

Right. That’s a rocket. Which is why I am dubious about something that can travel that fast and far in the atmosphere.

Raytheon said they aren’t a problem for their defenses...except few radars can ever track them.

“Raytheon said they aren’t a problem for their defenses...except few radars can even track them.”

How does that work?

Yes, the Ramjet engine was invented by a Frenchman, René Lorin, who called his engine a Pulsejet.

Ramjet

Pulsejet powered V-1

You ever see the size of those rockets? How long before they achieve Mach 8? Something that big would be destroyed before it lifted off.

“Which is why I am dubious about something that can travel that fast and far in the atmosphere.”

While they do have to deal with the atmospheric heating going at those speeds, unlike manned aircraft, they can allow far higher temperatures, which is why they can travel so fast.

(note: someone else here pointed out the above, not me!)

“the specifications included a range of 299 km (186 miles), a speed of 700 km/h (435 mph), and capable of delivering a 500-kilogram (1⁄2-long-ton) warhead”

I hope they got better.

That’s okay. I’m just here to play devil’s advocate to the guys on this chat who clearly know more. I might learn something.

You’re thinking of Fractional Orbital Bombing System, FOBS which is real and dangerous. This is a very fast theater missile.

Well, you’ve reached my limit - and I only got there the same way as you!

I’ve been pissed from the 1990s reading about new generations of Russian and Chinese weapons coming out, yet NEVER a response on our side. Maybe we were doing stuff (other than putting women’s bathrooms in our subs, at great expense, by the way), but we sure didn’t talk about it!

Thanks for the questions.

The critical division in missile engine and speed technologies is for use within the atmosphere or for use outside the atmosphere.

Atmospheric operation allows the option of using atmospheric oxygen as the oxidizer, but the atmosphere also imposes drag on the missile.
