“I’m paying $70/mth right now for the second fastest DLS speed they have.”

Just a tip but, if you haven’t already, you might want to check out T Mobile Home Internet. DSL was my only option till I got that, and it works great.

SOL. Nobody is going to extend modern broadband connections out to rural areas that were to be served by Starlink any time soon.

Many of these areas’ only other option was to buy the much older Hughesnet (and descendant) satellite internet systems which cost far more and required... about the same equipment investment. Oh, and they’re basically right on par with old dialup speeds, especially on upload.

That’s 5g. I don’t even get a cell phone signal at home. I’m in the boonies of hill country.

Put ten or twenty people on one Starlink and you might as well go back to dialup.

I don’t understand why this decision would impact anybody’s ability to sign up for Starlink, at least in the US.

The subsidy was to allow poor rural people to be able to get access to broadband, much like there’s a surcharge on your telephone bill to allow poor people to get landline access, where without it they couldn’t have afforded any service.

On a more macro level, it means that SpaceX will have to rescind or end any subsidized account offers which may put the service out of the financial reach of people in those poor underserved rural areas.

How much was the proposed discount on the $110/mo normal cost?

However, if similar landline and cellular programs are an example, it was probably 40-60%.

I don’t know, apparently they’re using community Based star links in Ukraine and they’re all gathering around the same Wi-Fi signal and sometimes there’s over a hundred people using the same star link on their mobile phones and their tablets and laptops. I think the issue is is you have to have a special star link that can handle the data uplink but there’s nothing in the satellite technology that doesn’t allow a much bigger bandwidth to be available it’s whether or not the transceiver in the star link itself can handle the throughput that’s why the one that they shipped to individual houses can’t handle it

They’re mostly using chat apps and posting text a la FR in those situations. They’re *not* all trying to watch videos and such.

Yes. I know that is what a star link uplink station does but there’s nothing limiting on the Spectrum side to prevent 10,000 such connections so it’s just a matter of utilizing the frequency space you just need the right infrastructure on the ground to support the bandwidth required

Just give Spectrum enough to extend the fiber 1/2mile to my house and I’d be happy.
