Actually, we don’t know how Roman’s saluted or if they did. Its origination is from Jacques-Louis David’s painting -” The Oath of the Horatii (1784)”. It provided the starting point for the gesture that became later known as the Roman salute. No Roman text gives this description and the Roman works of art that display salutational gestures bear little resemblance to the modern Roman salute.

The Roman salute (Italian: saluto romano) is a gesture in which the arm is held out forward straight, with palm down, and fingers touching. In some versions, the arm is raised upward at an angle; in others, it is held out parallel to the ground. The former is a well-known symbol of fascism that is commonly perceived to be based on a custom in ancient Rome.

#119. The news hyperventilating and creating fear about nuclear threats, threats Putin has not made means nothing. Putin is not going to use nuclear weapons. When 40 countries got together at Ramstein AFB and agreed to send weapons and aid to Ukraine, Putin made no nuclear threat. He missed his chance to make threats and negotiate his way out.

The US adopted the Bellamy (”Nazi”) flag salute before WWII.

Of course.

I knew that too.

Symbols, gestures, words, even colors get recycled, evolve in parallel, or change in their meanings.

Look at the rainbow, a biblical symbol.

Look at the German imperial navy flag. Forbidden to wave the Swastika flag in many places, they started using it and now the meaning has changed.

Look at the word “gay.” It once meant happy, but plagued with a bad image (very high suicide rates), the homosexual community adopted this word for themselves.

However: (In context), we all understand (we have a common understanding of what is meant) when these folks give the salute, goose step, shave their heads, use a modified swastika as their symbol... and when it is known that their founding leader admires the Nazi’s and openly claims such (in the past)...

It’s like everything else. If you have a kid from the Middle East and he says something negative about the West or Christians, that’s free speech. If he says some thing nice about his native/ethnic culture, that’s having respect for ones heritage... However, if he’s talking to bad guys in the Middle East, is buying material that can be used to make a weapon, travels back there (to get training most likely) and then comes back, gets money from bad actors... When 5, 6, 7 red flags go up, you can say with good certainty, he’s a shit head even though he hasn’t set anything off yet.

When you have a group and it’s a pattern of them painting swastikas on things (probably not because they are Buddhist), their founder (Andriy Biletsky) talks about how awesome the Nazi’s were and is blatetnly racist, they adopt a modified swastika for themselves, adopt various other symbols that are associated with a neo-nazi movement (dark sun, etc) which they incorporate in their patches, goose step (but they want to be a Western NATO nation and in the West the goose step has a meaning: we are not Chile and there is a reason why the Germans, Italians... no longer do that)... You start getting those 7 red flags.

Before long, the only excuse you have is to shake a head and scoff it off, make jokes about it and rhetorically minimize it, but that’s not an argument which is reasonable.

The US Congress in 2019 was looking at adding them as a terrorist group.

https://www.jpost.com/Diaspora/US-lifts-ban-on-funding-neo-Nazi-Ukrainian-militia-441884

EVERYONE knew these guys are a outright Nazi group. But because they were/are doing our dirty work, we ignored that minor technicality.

The UN said they are a bunch of neo-nazi whack jobs.

At some point, it becomes like the adage with the rabbit. “When it hops like a rabbit, eats carrots like a rabbit, don’t let folks convince you it’s a fish.”

“The UN said they are a bunch of neo-nazi whack jobs”.

If they are present-day Nazis, who is fearing them today?

Few give a second look at Florida’s motorcycle gangs—and their tattooed Nazi symbols.

I know you’re wrong about that one.

Federally there is a big emphasis on these types of organizations, BUT we at least still pretend as if you have basic rights and privacy, so we don’t just lock them up.

However, there is another aspect. These motorcycle gangs predominantly deal in drugs and commit crimes against rival bands. They are not funded and supported like Azov was. They don’t have US special forces giving them training on small unit tactics and how to conduct a guerilla war. They don’t get billions (literally) of US tax payer paid for weapons shoved up their ass.

Azov was targeting folks that were supportive of Russia, beating the shit out of them, even killing them. These were folks that lived there since before it was “Ukraine.”

When Biden talked about Putin being a “thug,” just remember that was while we’re backing folks like Azov.

The battle of public opinion was won early on here in the US. Russia bad, Ukraine good. But it’s a bit more complicated and specifically our actions were in no way noble. We started this war. We lied and broke agreements. We are hypocrites and expecting Russia to accept something we wouldn’t. I don’t blame Ukraine, and I don’t blame Russia (they have their reasons for being at each other’s throat). But we were total slime ball shit heads on this one, pretending this is about democracy or freedom (bullshit), human rights (bullshit), or a nations sovereignty (bullshit). This is about hard cold economics for us.

And worst of all, in 4-8 years when this is forgotten in the news, US policy makers will have moved on to some new target, the people of Ukraine will still be paying the price, dearly. They will be left with a big stinky load of shit we left in their backyard. But of course we’ll blame the evil baby blood drinking Russian soldiers, the asperger’s suffering madman Putin what’s to restore the Soviet Union (do people not feel like they are being treated like idiots?)...

Thanks for the long explanation.

"These were folks that lived there since before it was “Ukraine.”

Moscow had a bad habit of shifting whole demographics around to suit their politics of the moment.

If I considered myself a descendant of "Rus" Vikings, I'd be annoyed at those "settlers". (I don't consider myself a Viking, but Vikings had a penchant for tattoos).

As I mentioned elsewhere, the world considers Russians "too Asiatic".

________________ “I suspect even most here who do support the Neocon side of this war would rather not try to fight Russia in a ground war in that part of the world.” It’s been said that Russia is “too much Asian”. That wasn’t in regard to the Chechin brigades Putin sent to Ukraine. The Chechin troops’ leader, Ramzan Akhmadovich Kadyrov, said this week, “Watch out, Poland—you’re next”. https://news.yahoo.com/chechen-leader-staunch-putin-ally-threatens-poland-over-support-for-ukraine-130655904.html ___________

Too bad a settlement couldn't be reached--democratically. Billions of US dollars could have repatriated many Ukrainians to avoid bloodshed.

Two percent of a population sure has riled-up FReepers.

We could speak of our own "Borders-Language-Culture", as Michael Savage would put it.
