The EV crap will force ICVs to have cardboard bodies and plastic windows to meet MPG standards. The tires will become bike wheels that grip the road like on ice. The ride will become so noisy that you have to wear ear protection. The worst injuries will come from premature air-bag deployment from hitting potholes or becoming hit by those 4,555 lb Teslas.

Really? You think a semi hauling rocks wouldn’t crush a ‘50s Chrysler sedan?

The auto unions are going to lose a lot of members.

The auto industry & vendors to same will be teetering on bankruptcy.

IF it was that easy to have that kind of mileage, it would have been done before now.

I guess the fundamental, although quaint, question would be, why does the government get to make that decision?

I checked an article on the 10 best cars that currently get over 40 mpg. They are all hybrids. The tiny Chevrolet Spark gets 38 on the highway, 30 in the city. The even tinier so-called Smart car got 40 on the highway. Are those the kinds of cars the government is mandating?

I remember the changes in cars after the gas crisis of the ‘70s. Most of the land yachts went away and smaller cars became popular. A lot of them were terrible cars for a while, but they got better. What American manufacturers couldn’t provide, the Japanese and Koreans did. Was that change mandated by the government (I ask because I dont know) or was that the market responding to a need?

There may be a misunderstanding here.

These standards are typically intended to be an average across a fleet. Sometimes a manufacturer. If it is applied to strictly cars, that will exclude “light trucks” which is what SUVs are called.

And “cars” will include Smartcars and other ultra small vehicles. They will drag the average up so Cadillacs can still be built.

There will be a very long list of things that the next administration will need to undo “first thing” in 2025, assuming that the present form of government still exists.

Easy. No car can travel faster than 30 mph.
Much safer too.

And Biden (or Buttgig) says “buy a Tesla”. Marie Antoinette said “Let them eat cake”.

Why not 75 mpg as long as we’re picking random numbers?

Looks fake to me.

Nope. It was a real test to show 50 years of safety improvements. As an aside, it also shows just how small old cars really were compared to modern vehicles. They just seemed bigger because of how the design has changed over the years.
