Reportedly they still have those, having still kept some of the Soviet-era concepts of logistics dispersal. Now, how useful these aircraft would be even with logistical support is another story.

The facts on the ground are the people in those region are Russian speaking ethnic Russians who do not want to be part of Ukraine....and who have been oppressed and targeted by the Ukrainian government.

And that justifies invading practically the whole, damn country?

I won't even ask if it morally justifies it... Does it politically or militarily justify it?

Regards,

If the politicians and their families (aunts, uncles, children), all their relatives had to fight the wars, there would be a lot fewer (and a lot shorter) wars!

Take your pick, either one and you would be right.

Except we do have vital interests there [Ukraine], it’s a long list.

With all due respect, no we don't. It's major export is agricultural. Many neighboring countries may need that. We don't. Our total imports from Ukraine in 2019 were $1.3B. That is pretty small.

It doesn't control vital shipping routes or key geography that we need to control.

Sadly it is not a vital US interest.

How much of the $13.6 Billion we are sending to the Ukraine is actually going to be spent on worthwhile stuff that actually will help the Ukrainian people, vs how much will make it into the corrupt leadership's pockets?

A goodly sum will not escape the coffers of Washington DC. Of that most will remain in the US and what gets sent overseas is some stuff bought at high prices paid to folks right here who have the right connections.

Lol it has massive oil and gas reserves and pipelines to Europe through it, and it has Black Sea access for Russia, and it’s a straight shot across Poland to Germany, plus it borders numerous NATO countries. Plus yeah it feeds a lot of the world.

Second largest country in Europe.

But nothing strategic there. /s

A couple points. 1) that's exactly what NATO did in Serbia. 2) The Russians view a neutral Ukraine rather than a hostile Ukraine in NATO as an unacceptable national security threat - much like the US viewed Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba

For the record, I think Putin went to far. I think he could have justifiably sent peacekeepers into Luhansk and Donetsk where they were welcomed by the population but Russians were obviously not wanted or welcome elsewhere in Ukraine. He *might* achieve his military objectives but politically this has doubtless harmed Russia by cutting it off the entire Western world.

we are involved by way of the biolabs

which the russians dumped evidence of on the UN security council

that’s different from shipping in military equipment

First you are a very confused person, clearly. Just because you have labeled it "strategic" does not mean it is a vital interest to the US. PS. There is a clear definition of "vital interest." It is one we would use all means at our disposal to defend, up to and including our nuclear deterrent.

Ukraine is not a US vital interest, which is the argument you are ducking. It's been a vital interest of Russia for centuries because budding imperialists keep trying to use it as an invasion route.

Second, why is it of "strategic" importance to the US. It lies across none of our sea lines of communication. It provides a land bridge to nowhere we need to go. And the US was and would be self-sufficient in energy if we did not have deep staters trying to steal it from others rather than develop our own.

I provided you with facts. Very clear ones. Your answer is there were no facts.

What point is there drawing a picture for the blind. Should I draw it twice?

I gather we have a lot of people on FR who cannot look at a map, don’t understand the history of Europe, and when you tell them about things like gas and oil pipelines on which Western Europe is dependent, they either don’t understand or refuse to listen.

Hey I’m sure none of it is important. /s

Not monkeys at all, but everything I listed is important to Western Europe and the United States of America.

Putin will be able to hold Europe hostage more than at present, he will be able to threaten Nato and Europe far more, and his navy will be able to reach ours far more directly.

But they are blind who will not see. Until it’s too late.

The “not our circus” surrender caucus will find a reason surrender when one of our carriers is sunk. Guaranteed. That’s where this is all headed. No country is respecting US power now. Allies and enemies all think we are a joke. We’re exposed and the price paid will be in American blood.

They think Biden is trying to cause a war. In fact he has caused one, but through weakness.

We’ll have to disagree about Zelensky - I’ve listened to all his videos and intrviews, aside from the drama I listen to the substance of what he’s saying. So I’ll respectfully disagree.

I’m not for or against either Ukraine nor Russia as both have had conflicts of all sorts for years. However i do not want to see our troops fighting in this conflict. I won’t comment on Regan’s decisions in Afghanistan. But anything about Afghanistan is never good for anyone who gets involved. You can’t free a people who don’t want to be.
