It would give an out to the West to back off/undo sanctions quickly - “It was all the megalomaniac’s fault and he was dealt with”.

As much as I’d like to just put it all behind us and move on the fact remains that after this invasion is undone the Russian people are going to need to pay to fix the damage they caused to Ukraine.
