Moving towards forward with deployment because the Pentagon brass is fascinated by expensive toys that they have their careers wrapped up in - not to mention the prospective “consulting” gigs they will get after leaving the service.
No one in the Pentagon gives a rat’s patoot about readiness and effective weapons, rather they are focused on climate change, CRT, and diversity.
So yes, its a dog that can only run from a fight with a peer to survive. To wit: they have been eliminated for that reason in any war game against China, and certainly, would only survive for seconds against most any Russian air-superiority fighter.
Sources are all over the net.
I just hope the crew that was injured was racially and sexually diverse. That is what matters most.
Sources all over the Internet also say that the F-35 was designed to replace the US Navy's legacy Hornets in the strike role, but that the Navy's Super Hornets would continue to be used and procured for the air superiority role, and to escort the F-35s, especially the EA-18G "Growler" variant.
Sources also say that the F-35 was designed to replace the Marine's AV-8Bs. (A huge mistake, in my opinion, but that's water over the dam.)
And sources all over the Internet say that the F-35 was designed to replace the F-16 in the light strike role, and the F-117 in the stealth high value target strike role. The F-15E would continue to be used in the heavy strike role, the F-15C (and now the F-15EX) along with the F-22 would continue in the air superiority role.
I'd say that the F-35 is well on its way to fulfilling it's original design role as a first-day-of-war stealth strike fighter, followed by a non-stealthy bomb truck further into the campaign.
When the intended role of the F-35 is understood, then and only then can one evaluate how effectively it is progressing towards fullfilling that role.
FYI: The F-35 was designed as a bomb truck, to compliment the F22 air-superiority fighters. The F-35 no matter (which erroneous source you site and one that is usually wrong, misleading and often devoid of pertinent facts) was never intended to be an air-superiority fighter. And is useless, unless air-superiority is achieved first - no matter what day of the war it is.
Who cares what it was supposed to replace, if its in the hanger and down for weeks of complicated maintenance?
Qualification doesn’t matter. Many people just repeat criticisms of the F-35 because they “Read it somewhere on the internet”.
Hence the “S” in JSF.
—
“S” stands for “sucks” as fighter and not too hot as a bomb truck with it limited 4 bomb ordinance. The Pentagon can give what ever fancy name it chooses to impress the congress into funding more money for their pet toys.
Its a full on loser in any **peer**conflict and best used as a marginal overwatch for refuelers and AWACs planes.
Yep, and then they are offended when someone questions their criticism or motive. See 25
You really should work on your reading comprehension, and re-read what I posted.
I said EXACTLY what you clam above.
Try again, sir.
four bomb ordinance is only during stealth strike mode, and is double what the F-117 was capable of.
Here's the F-35's complete loadout:
“I wonder if it’s just an accident, or if it’s another example of the F35 being a lousy platform?”
It’s not “lousy”, by any objective metric. It has one of the better safety records for a new fighter. It will also win in battle against any non-stealthy fighter under real world conditions.
More information will come, I’m betting on pilot error...
Classic Newton's 4th law type type approach when you hit a nerve.- "For every action there is an over reaction"
lol. I’m stealing that!
There was a torpedo the US had in WWII that had a bad habit of not detonating on impact ( don’t remember the # off hand). Sub captains went to great lengths to get good hits on the targets, but that only made it worse IIRC. So they did trials on the torpedoes with an underwater cliff in Hawaii to simulate a ship, and found out there was a problem with the firing pin. Something about the pin would buckle and not go off if the shot was at a right angle(?).
Imagine being the salvage crew that had to recover a live torpedo to find out why it didn’t go off…
Someone should inform the Navy that they can’t just throw away F35s like they did Corsairs and Hellcats.
I dont have the latest statistics, but when I was still active duty flying, I believe the 'average' a/c loss for a deployment was one a/c. I did peacetime deployments where we didn't lose a plane. I recall other peacetime deployments (not mine) that lost as many as 4 a/c. I dont know the record, but it could be higher. Wartime of course is different. In 91 we lost 4 in two weeks, but those were all due to combat. I digress.
The comments italicized aren’t mine, but I get your point.
No worries... I’m always amazed by freepers that notice the slightest clue in the meta data that posters will have included in their original postings. (Clues that often slip past me.) I just happened to “see” the ramp’s unique design, in an afterthought, even though it was there for the viewing all along.
I don’t mind being corrected when I’m wrong or post something mistakenly... most of us are here to get at the truth.

Being "in defense aviation" and "having enough knowledge and expertise to pass final judgement on the F-35" are two wildly different things. (Reminder: "Appeal to Authority" is a logical fallacy.)

“My wingman was a brand-new F-35A pilot, seven or eight flights out of training. He gets on the radio and tells an experienced 3,000-hour pilot in a very capable fourth-generation aircraft. ‘Hey bud, you need to turn around. You’re about to die. There’s a threat off your nose,’” he continued.https://theaviationist.com/2019/04/02/heres-what-three-italian-f-35-instructor-pilots-with-62nd-fs-have-to-say-about-their-first-red-flag-with-the-lightning-ii/The pilot eventually took out the enemy jet and then went on to net three more “kills.”
“I’ve never seen anything like it before,” Wood said.
“We knew we had an operational advantage, due to the 5th generation technology, but we didn’t expect such a high “kill” ratio: in the 16 OCA missions (Offensive Counter Air) we flew, we neutralized more than 100 SAM systems and never lost a plane,” commented Maj. Marine pilots flying new F-35B stealth fighters took top honors during this month’s Red Flag exercise, which is considered the world’s largest aerial war game.Note that the F-35B is the oft-maligned STOVL variant.Fighter Attack Squadron 211, part of the Miramar-based 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, was recognized as the outstanding unit during the exercise over the southern Nevada desert between Aug. 3 and Aug. 15.
Blah, blah, blah. All that crap can be said of every airplane that’s come along. No one is investing in the Pig. No one. We’re all looking to much more capable aircraft and capabilities.
The F-35 gets shot down by the F-22 every time, for damned good reasons. The Pig not great at anything.
“So you have no sources beyond your own personal opinion?”
I’ll take my professional opinion over your pizza delivery boy opinion any day.
And I would expect nothing less from you.
How long ago did you retire?
