Unfortunately, it really did that back in 1932 with FDR (or 1912 with Wilson, with a brief intermission). Eisenhower had ample opportunity to role back 20 years of Socialism and Communist sympathy within the government and what did he do ? He decided to try to “manage” big government leftism instead and put a smile on it. He could’ve followed Harding, but instead he was just an extension of FDR and Truman’s failed regimes.
Fun fact about Ike: He inflicted more damage to the national GOP, killing it as a majority party for 40 years. Not even Hoover could do that. We had more Senate seat losses in 1958 than at any other time before or since for the GOP. Even worse than post-Watergate.
Eisenhower also knifed McCarthy in the back.
Ike knew what McCarthy did about the Communist infiltration, but he didn’t like the “dirty laundry” being aired for public consumption. Ike was obviously quite happy to see Joe destroyed and dead from the stress of the job and alcohol by 1957. Too bad the “Red Scare” wasn’t scarier to the public and a cleansing from top to bottom wasn’t pursued. After all, if the Nazis had infested America, they certainly wouldn’t have stopped to cleanse them. THAT would’ve been called “patriotic.” But the Communists ? Naah.
Biggest mistake in WW2 was not letting the Nazis and the Soviets just destroy one another. Even the Nazis warned us that the Soviets would be far worse if they won. Ah, two great leftist totalitarian farces for evil. No wonder the Demonrats worship these guys.
We needed to stop the Nazis. FDR sold out at Yalta, and his administration was littered with Commies. You are right, Eisenhower could have backed up McCarthy, but he allowed the subversion to go on. he also let Cuba fall to the commies. He was a bad President.
The Communists were demonstrably worse (and fun fact, they killed more Jews than the Nazis, too). FDR was a power-hungry totalitarian, but by 1944 he was simply grotesquely incompetent and ill. The State Department was infested with Communists by Ike’s era, and many were in love with Fidel and backing his false claim he wasn’t pro-Soviet. They had to get rid of the anti-Castro Ambassador to Cuba to replace him with a Fidelista. You know the rest.
