Many of them probably started with the drug alcohol - do you support criminalizing that drug? I don’t.
And any progression from pot to harder drugs has been made easier by both being illegal and thus sold in the same channels; legalization of pot could weaken that link.

If we wanted to become a police state; American conservatives don’t want that - YMMV.
