Kind of explains all those Japanese civilians on Saipan jumping off the cliffs to their deaths in the rocks and oceans below.

My late father-in-law served in the Marine Corps in WW2. His first combat action was Saipan.
He told of the horror of watching this happen. He said that no matter how hard the Marines tried to convince them otherwise they jumped to their deaths or blew themselves up in caves.
He fired twice at jump kick man and missed. That’s one of the counts.
God. I understand there were many men who were traumatized for life because of that. It is one of the reasons the Japanese were such implacable foes...they really did all they could to implement a “hive mind” mentality, and all the bad that went along with that.
Men like your father were giants for even just having lived through that.
