“already starting with solar farms and windmills. “

Get rid of the tax payments to those industries and try again.

“to be carbon-free”

So, you think producing steel and all the other metals in a car is not using massive amounts of carbon? Besides, why is carbon so bad since your body is made of it?

Public school really did a number on your thoughts.

has inadvertently put a huge amount of control into the hands of China, which controls around 90% of the market

Ummm...I don't think there was anything inadvertent about it!

#3 abundant element is aluminium, not lithium.

I care not one bit about my carbon footprint. This isn’t about a footprint it is about removing your ability to travel except on government approved and provided mass transit. Don’t fall for this scam.

And the Left is constantly working to halt generation from most of those including, coal, nuclear, NG, hydro to name a few.

The issue isn't about carbon itself. It's about "excessive" carbon-based gases being released to the atmosphere. I understand the arguments about the Greenhouse Effect. I also understand that CO2 is plant food. Plus, humans are not the only source of carbon-based gases: consider the burning of forests, forests that have not been properly managed for decades. If the Sierra Club and other organizations like it are not willing to go and clean out the excessive fuel load, then they don't really care, do they?

Getting back to the point: burning fossil fuels contributes to more than just CO2 emissions. There is particulate matter, depending on the source.

...slush hydrogen will make filling stations in vogue again.

Do you really think it will EVER be possible to pull into a “slush-hydrogen station” and say “Fill ‘er up!”?

Let’s see how well that goes, in a year or three.

While you can cut down your carbon footprint by a massive margin by switching over to an EV...

I believe this statement from the article is false.

MANY years ago, I worked with a guy who had his master’s degree in electrochemistry.

He told us that batteries were more than capable of being made far more efficient than they are. They just aren’t because of profit.

The longer the batteries last, the less people have to buy. So they make them last not so long, so they can sell more.

Impact on the environment does not even come on their radar, apparently.

One of the more ignorant journalists on the planet. Take a gander at the Periodic Table. At the beginning you see Hydrogen, then Helium and quick, tell me what #3 is. Yup, Lithium

Helium is the second most common in the universe but I believe it's comparatively rare on earth, especially us being able to mine and use Helium. So "Gandering" at the Periodic Table isn't a good argument.

I would look for a reserve number for Lithium. What is the level of the latest Lithium reserves.

Not necessarily suggesting this, but if it were conservatives pushing EV’s the Lefties would be pushing to include lithium as a “conflict mineral” a la “blood diamonds” and several “strategic materials”. Businesses dealing in Lithium would immediately be drowned in paperwork to ‘certify’ that their lithium did not come from a listed region or country.

From National Geographic:

“Coal is the largest source of energy for generating electricity in the world, and the most abundant fossil fuel in the United States.”

In addition, in 2015 the DOE requested proposals for recovering rare-earth elements from coal products.

Sarma Pisupati, professor of energy and mineral engineering, Penn State has stated:

“We have known for many decades that rare-earth elements are found in coal seams and near other mineral veins, However, it was costly to extract the materials and there was relatively low demand until recently.”

My thoughts and questions:

Speaking about the state of MO. We get a 70% of our electricity from coal and about 11% from our one nuclear plant. So we would be plugging in our cars to recharge the battery which would be coming largely from coal.

I fail to see how that helps the environment. In addition, from the articles that I read when Texas had their winter power outage, it seems that once you reach 25% of power production from wind/solar, that’s when the problems start.

The sun doesn’t shine all the time, the wind isn’t always sufficient, and the battery storage needed gets excessive. Additionally the battery’s efficiency is negatively impacted at winter temperatures.

It seems to me, that coal, natural gas, and good ole gas for the car, are the logical sources for the majority of energy needs. And so far, the wind and solar aren’t practical for more than a little bit of supplemental energy.

Through the years, it seems when TPTB do “stupid” stuff, there is some sort of back-room deal benefiting people/organizations that are not “we the people”.

So what is truly behind this “green” energy that ain’t really all that clean? Who benefits?

“He told us that batteries were more than capable of being made far more efficient than they are. They just aren’t because of profit.”

Was your friend speaking about re-chargeable batteries or throw away types, I wonder? Because the ideally you’d want the rechargeable to have a long-life. How many power tools get went into the dumpster early because the battery format changed and the old-style was no longer obtainable?

Disposable battery design — I suspect — is more tied to the capital investment in the cheap, efficient manufacture of those cells. A small design change could invalidate a lot of plant & equipment for a product that doesn’t have much of a sales margin.

All this bickering about EV's vs ICE cars is a distraction by the Left. They want people to give up private ownership of cars. They're attacking ICE ownership as a start, then they'll go after EV ownership. I think EV sales will never go beyond 25 percent of all vehicle sales, with ICE vehicles continuing to have 75 percent market share. But, there will be immense pressure on getting people out of cars, to opt for public transportation (which sucks) and ride-sharing options. There is plenty of oil, and carbon emissions are not a threat to the Earth.

The Left is evil with their agendas.

Lithium is not a Rare Earth Element. It is found in many brines however due to its strong bonds, it’s not often found as an ore.

>>ow, how many ways can you make electricity? Let’s see, geothermal, nuclear, hydroelectric, coal fired, solar, wind, waves and tidal, chemical, waterfalls, steam driven, methane, hydrogen cells.<<

So you want to drive from CA to TX in your electric car. You have to CAREFULLY plan — if it is even possible.

Internal Combustion engine: jump in and drive.

As for reliability, they look to be around the same as ICs. Not better. Perhaps it is bc ICs have been around for almost 100 years and EVs are at most 30 years (Assuming the EV1 is the start). There was some tinkering over the years but not mass market acceptance.

What will you do when your batteries expire? Contribute to the landfill pollution?
