“What can he say? Medical emergency? Forced to drive at gunpoint?”

He needs to start identifying as a black transgender lesbian, but in this case I don’t think that would even help. Hopefully.

Hard to eye ball from the photos. From memory here in Australia all bridges under 5.3m (about 17’ 5”) have to be sign posted.

Make a ramp out of the convenient super structure augmentation and then make that lane traffic muscle car only. It can work, I’ve seen actual footage.

Think of how much money the local speed traps will pull in.

Good picture.

Once those bearing plates are damaged it’s game over. I get a chance to see them up close while doing my ornithology research (Barn Swallows like to nest at the far ends of the stringers). Observed a plate one day that had some apparent damage and had to call the DOT, and they had a bridge crew come out and verify that there was in fact no damage, but was just weather worn.

My son used to manage a warehouse until recently and said they would get deliveries from rigs with 3 Pakistanis and another with 3 Indians who lived for months on end in the truck. That was their way of getting around the driving curfews.

He said those truck cabs and drivers were riper than a rotten banana.

Thanks. I’m pretty aware of CTE and vibration and shock fudge factors in design.

It’s just that too often that does not cover for catastrophic impact. It wasn’t meant to. So, as we had here in Baltimore, and just the other week in DC, the bridge just gets clipped and the whole thing crashes down. This though, was apparently a very elevated dump truck. That has to be a lot of force square onto the center of that span. But maybe the truck held it up!

Those beams look pretty straight, not bent from the crash. It looks like the beams had no restraint at the supports against lateral forces such as a truck too tall crashing into them. Bridge supports usually allow beams to slide or rock back and forth in line with the beams. Me thinks the design engineer did not design lateral restraint. Ergo, demolish the bridge.

“rigs with 3 Pakistanis and another with 3 Indians who lived for months on end in the truck.”

It used to be Mexicans doing that.
I had heard about 3 Mexicans that got busted in the same truck. They were using ONE log book. They had a tri-color pen and each had a color. No sleeper breaks were shown. When a new driver took over he just continued the driving line in his color. They showed fuel breaks, pick ups, deliveries and nothing else. They finally got caught in South Dakota at a Port of Entry. When the station master saw their log book he got them out of the truck and took the keys.
For a long time I thought it was one of those urban legend things or someone’s imagination.
One day I passed through a SD PoE and got pulled in for a truck inspection so I asked about it. The station master said it wasn’t a joke, he had been one of two guys working the station that day. He verified most of what I had heard.
Only one of the 3 spoke English and one didn’t even have a CDL.

Looks like there was nothing but gravity holding that section of the bridge in place.

Believe it or don’t but the steel bridge is designed to move with expansion and contraction. Gravity does hold it in place vertically

With the bed raised, I would think there was a good amount of upward force on that span - I bet it rippled real good.

That’s a lot of things. When it flooded here beyond expectation, a lot of homes on stilts were washed away. The rising water applied a countering vertical force that lifted many of the homes off of their toenailed foundation. The weight of the home was intended to keep it on the stilts.
