Difficult to blame a union and contract carpenter for an explosion when there’s a city employed welder just around the other side.
“I have welded holes shut in a 50,000 gallon fuel tank that was 1/2 full.”
If you are welding a water tank that doesn’t have H2S inside it, it is relatively simple. But in the western part of the San Juaquin valley there is an incredible amount of it everywhere. It is noticeable from just east of Hanford to the coast ranges miles to the west and from just south of Fresno to Bakersfield.
Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, flammable, extremely hazardous gas with a “rot- ten egg” smell. Some common names for the gas include sewer gas, stink damp, swamp gas and manure gas. It occurs naturally in crude petroleum, natural gas, and hot springs. There is a lot of petroleum in that area. The welder didn’t flush the tank and ignited the gas. Simple to do. Not real bright though.
