I was just talking to a friend about this today. It’s my belief that self driving cars and the high cost of ownership will spell the end of private auto ownership. It will take a while, and there will still be a small group of collectors, but basically an app will bring a car to your door.

FileMaker Pro is a crucial program for some work I do personally on contract. They are pushing the subscription model, and I continue to pay for a permanent license. I no longer get newer versions of Acrobat Pro because of Adobe’s pushing of subs.

You’ll own nothing and you’ll be happy.

“One problem is that people want to go somewhere (e.g. work) the same 10% of the time.”

Why is that a problem?

It’s an enhanced lease.

They throw in maintenance and insurance, up the price.

Do they allow you to terminate at will? If so, it’s a long term rental.

I remember about 1973 my father and new stepmother took a night out at a nice restaurant. They parked next to a new Chrysler New Yorker or Imperial. It was new and still had the window sticker with a total price of 10 Grand plus!

They were flabbergasted at that. This was 8 years after he bought his only new car in 1965 for just under $2,400. And was still driving it.

Beg to differ

Elon Musk has been saying the exact same thing. Letting your car make you money when you aren’t using it. EV and autopilot enables an entirely different ownership mindset. Let your car be its own Uber or Lyft service while you sleep or work.

Essentially let your car’s AI earn a living while you aren’t using it. You are free to do what you want with your car

Not with mine

Ok, you got me to read it a little more closely. Read even more like a scam the second time.

Death of car ownership is the death of individual freedom.

Yes. You can also pause. Rentals do not include liability insurance.

Welcome back to feudalism 2021. You don’t own anything, we just bleed your paycheck dry and you become a serf.

Why is that a problem?

The subscription model is based on the proposition that cars are underutilized if the are only used 10% of the time. If the people who want to use cars all want to use them at the same time, it does nothing to spread out the use of the cars.
