Seems like all the mean, unhappy people are white in this movie. Maybe that’s racist.

What wonderful memories. I hadn't seen it since the 1940s. Song of the South and Fantasia were the first movies I saw, when I could hardly climb up into the movie seat. I'm amazed how impactful and memorable many of those scenes are, more than 70 years later.

I can see why some people want to shelve this movie; but if only they could know what a beneficial effect it had at the time. It was very much ahead of its time on the deeper levels. The affection and respect between people regardless of the situation they were born into was consistently displayed from one scene to the next.

Some of the adult scenes of course had flown over my head as a child. What a revelation to see them as an adult. The scene with Hattie McDaniel singing in the kitchen while Remus came knocking was just fantastic.

At first blush (I watched it, I believe for the very first time, the other night) I would say it is a movie about friendship and the power of the imagination.

The other thing that struck me was the time frame. Was this before or after the Civil War? If before, then how would Uncle Remus be able to decide to hop on a wagon and leave the plantation? A slave couldn't just decide to get up and go. If it was post-Civil War, then that plantation had been spared by Gen. Sherman and the Union Army, a pristine bubble surrounded by magnolia trees.

I had the same thought. I guess only Disney knew for sure.
