Dangerous, illegal, and stupid. So is stealing an election.
Following silly rules are for stupid little people. I am an EE so I know what I am doing. There was nothing unsafe about how I powered MY house.

Good suggestions, but one reminder. “Melting snow and ice on the roof during the day was a significant resource,”
He pointed out they used it for flushing toilets, washing, washing dishes, etc. All good uses, but reminder don’t drink water from the roof unless it’s a metal roof maybe. But composition and cedar shake shingles have all kinds of treatments and chemicals on them that you don’t want. And not always as in “cancer 45 years from now”, but as in “bad cramps and problems tonight”.

Is there a special external dedicated outlet you would recommend for an electrician to install for a generator?

Well we don't have no hurricanes here, but we could have used one of those in 2019, or 2020. When we had a storm that knocked my neighbor's tree down on on their car. My son helped them to cut the tree down as the insurance didn't want to do it.
It knocked our powerline down in our back yard down and we were with out power for about a hole week. The whole neighbor hood was a mess. The light company had trouble getting to the area because of all the the debris. We had to use candles for light. I think we were out for about a week.

I would say the $4,000 Winco HPS12000HE Tri-Fuel Generator puts you a little over the $200 budget :)

Plus a transfer switch, installation of that, etc.
We got a used 3950 watt Champion for $150 that got us through Harvey and other glitches. Last year we got a new one($400), very similar that uses the same twist lock 240 vac splitter cable.

Let’s just say that’s not something I would even think about doing. I use a manual transfer switch along with strict power up / power down protocols. It’s not rocket science. Then all we have to do is throw another log in the woodstove.

$200 for 3 days? Sounds like an expensive weekend camping.

Like I said I back feed through the dryer outlet. Cost me about $100 for 50 feet 10gu flex strand four wire and two 30 amp plugs + the the gen set of course. Electricians cost too much for me.
If you are uncomfortable doing this then call and electrician and get your check book out.

No thanks. While it can be done, I prefer a more code-complaint approach. It’s not that hard with a little planning.

Absolutely. That and a UL certified transfer switch. Do it wrong and you can back feed into the power lines and kill someone.
That’s why the dryer trick is dangerous, illegal and stupid.

Do it wrongYou mean leave the main breaker closed while on the gen set? I agree if you are that dumb then you shouldn't be touching anything electrical in your house.
