” Demand good attendance there. Demand good classroom behavior. Demand that the homework be completed. Etc. It can be done. Private schools do it all the time.”

But private schools can choose their students and public schools are required to accept every human in the right age group.

If a certain demographic (which cannot be named) exhibits horrible classroom behavior, attends only as the mood strikes them, and does no homework and this results in disciplinary action at a higher rate than other groups, well, that’s racism of course.

Right. And that’s why it’s really not fair to do a straight-up comparison of private and public schools. As you noted, private schools can be much more choosy.

But that public school disadvantage can be overcome - to a point - by bold leadership. In my entire public school career I only encountered one such bold leader. He was principal of my school for three years. The guy was an ex-Army paratrooper, and he was amazing. He knew how to motivate the staff, and he knew how to motivate the kids.

Why are such people so rare in public education? Bold leaders take risks. For example, that principal was not afraid to suspend disruptive kids. He was not afraid to set strict rules.

But risk-takers don’t get promoted in public schools these days. They make too many waves. So most principals take the easy way out. They don’t take any real risks.

(I think I started rambling a bit there. Sorry!)

I had a superintendent/principal (small district one man filled both roles) like that. He was gruff, but took the attitude that he hired competent teachers and he let us teach the way we thought best. He wasn’t afraid to confront parents of unruly kids either. But...he disturbed enough of them that the school board voted to not renew his contract. Administrators in MO are not protected by tenure laws—they basically work on one-year contracts.

The principals who followed were careful keep the parents and the school board happy. Luckily for a long time the district’s problem kids were few and and we were able to demand a lot of our kids.

(No problem with the rambling!—I tend to do it when I get going)

Heck; here in Indianapolis we just worry about getting enough white core members of the art museum to keep visiting it.

It’s a delayed gratification type of thing,
which means you have to extrapolate how an action today
may play out in the future,
ie, you have to be able to “connect the dots”.

Sounds like something Rome dreamed up.
