I served with an ARVN officer from Hanoi.
His father was an official in a village near Hanoi.
First he was asked for political favors, he said no.
Sudden cutbacks in support for his village.
Next they slapped him around.
He sent the family south to live with relatives.
In the end they murdered him.

My barber was a Lieutenant in the ARVN.
Spent 10 years in “re-education” camps where 90% starved to death.
Eventually released, he got on one of two refugee boats with 200 each. They floated the South China Sea without power for weeks, drinking urine to stay alive. Th other boat sank, and all 200 died.
His odds of survival were 1 in 20. He says about America, “I love this country. There is enough to eat.”
