Incumbent Roy Cooper (D), Dan Forest (R), Al Pisano (C), and Steven DiFiore II (L) are running for governor in North Carolina on November 3, 2020.

Cooper was elected in 2016 after defeating incumbent Pat McCrory (R). Cooper received 49.0% of the vote to McCrory's 48.8%. Forest, the state's lieutenant governor, was first elected in 2012 and was re-elected in 2016 with 52% of the vote to Democrat Linda Coleman's 45%.

Seventeen states elect governors and lieutenant governors separately. North Carolina is one of three with a governor and lieutenant governor from different parties (along with Louisiana and Vermont).[1]

North Carolina is one of eight states that both voted for Donald Trump (R) in 2016 and has a Democratic governor. In 2016, Trump received 50% of the vote to Hillary Clinton's (D) 46% in the state.

North Carolina is also one of 14 states with a divided government. Democrats hold the governorship and Republicans control both the state House of Representatives and state Senate. In the 2020 elections, Democrats would need to flip 10% of state Senate seats and 5% of state House seats to take control of each chamber.

North Carolina is one of 11 states holding an election for governor in 2020. As of October 2020, there are 24 Democratic governors and 26 Republican governors. In 2020, seven of the 26 states with a Republican governor will hold a gubernatorial election, while four of the 24 states with a Democratic governor will hold a gubernatorial election. Two of the 11 offices up for election are open, meaning that the incumbent governor is not seeking re-election. Click here for more information on other 2020 gubernatorial elections.

Now I know why N.C. has a Democrat Governor. The conservative vote is split 3 ways. Really hard to win that way.

NC is my 2nd home state. Was a beautiful, gracious, welcoming place when I arrived as a young buck in the late 70s.

It’s turned into a mess.....one reason I left in 2014 to close the circle with my true home state.

It used to be conservative to the core.

If they re-elect Cooper, they deserve everything coming to them.

It’s definitely an uphill battle and Forest isn’t near the top yet. He may be close enough to pull off an upset, though.

North Carolina is my 1st and only home state, and I can tell you, those of us who are natives are still conservative to the core.

However, when you have liberals from the north pouring in, you won’t remain a conservative state.

It’s the liberal enclaves - Wake County (Raleigh), Durham County, Mecklenburg County (Charlotte) that are dooming us.

Cooper would have lost to McCray if he had not cheated. Same will be true again this year. If he doesn’t cheat, he will lose.

“Cooper would have lost to McCray “

It’s McCrory. I still don’t understand how McCrory lost that election. Didn’t he screw up handling a bathroom situation in Charoltte?

McCrory was ahead until they kept some precincts open very late in Durham county. They added enough votes through that “late” voting to overcome the difference.
