Freeland, Maryland, is basically directly south of New Freedom, Pennsylvania.
The Pennsylvania community was founded in the early 19th century so connection with being a free state is very likely. There was—and remains—a large community of freed African Americans about 15 miles to the east directly north of the Mason-Dixon
