Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt has announced a new policy that will limit the types of charges pressed against protesters in Portland. Schmidt announced at a Tuesday press conference that he is only pressing charges against protesters arrested for assault, theft, or property damage. That means he'll be dropping lesser charges that the Portland Police Bureau (PPB) often arrests protesters for, such as rioting, disorderly conduct, and "interfering with a peace officer"—a catch-all term for not following orders or bothering a cop. OK ... what is the DA going to do about criminal charges against rioters (assuming he knows — or will acknowlege — there is a difference between “protestors” and “rioters”.
Cops should just let em burn it all down.

I suppose in Portland, one must be standing in a circle of fire holding severed heads to be considered a rioter.
The immediate problem I see with this is, if the rioters can get away with all these infractions while rioting, the odds the behavior will immediately transfer to non-rioting situations is pretty high.
Let all the police stay home and let the Portland citizens free to go out now and beat the shit out of every ANTIFA idiot without fear of arrest.

You are assuming that the thugs still left in the PPB are worth squirrel sh!t. They show up for the riots for the optics. They KNOW "arresting" anyone is jerking off. They don't even bother to list the names. The "rioters" aren't in the cop shop long enough to get to use the bathroom.
Arrest the rioters, load them onto busses and drop them off at the da’s house.
Meanwhile in Missouri
Governor Mike Parsons is expanding Operation LeGend to include St. Louis. It is a program which started in Kansas City in which the U.S Department of Justice is dedicating agents from ATF, FBI, DEA, and U.S. Marshals Service to help the cities cope with violent crime.
The Governor has put extra state troopers in St. Louis and attorney general Eric Schmitt has been working with U.S. Attorney Jeff Jenson in prosecuting violent offenders.
The Governor has called the General Assembly into a special session for the purpose of giving Schmitt authority to prosecute cases in which St. Louis prosecuting attorney Kim Gardner has not brought charges within 90 days of filing.
Schmitt moved to drop charges brought by Gardner against the St. Louis couple who defended their home with firearms during a protest against the Mayor.
