Facing a wave of evictions, California is about to make thousands of kids homeless
LA Times ^ | Aug 7, 2020 | ERIKA D. SMITH

Things weren’t great before COVID-19, but at least only about 570 families, hungry, broke and on the brink of homelessness, needed help from the volunteers at St. Joseph Center in Los Angeles.

Today, that number is about 860. A month from now, it could be in the thousands — or even more.

California is rapidly approaching what has been dubbed the “eviction cliff,” or the point where true protection from being evicted during the pandemic will fall away, at least for a short time. If that happens, as many as 1 million families across the state — some 365,000 in Los Angeles County alone — could find themselves at risk of being forced out of their homes, perhaps as soon as September.

By some estimates, tens of thousands — if not hundreds of thousands — of people with no jobs and no safety net to fall back on could become homeless...

They won’t let people work. How can we pay rent if we can’t work. It’s so insane.

Yes I’m working thank God but there but for the grace of God...our government here is so vile.

Of course I think evictions should still be legal since landlords still have to pay all their expenses. And so on. Banks will fold if they don’t get mortgage payments.

This is all at the foot of the state. What a reprehensible bunch. Yes I know the majority of California voted for them.

Sounds like a renter’s market.

What a travesty. A country/state giving itself a self inflicted wound. It’d be like sticking your hand in a meat grinder.

Yeah, my response was kinda harsh. Read the article - landlords aren’t getting paid. So the choice is, the federal gov’t pays the rent owed (landlords happy), or governor Newson does an EO to prevent evictions, and landlords may default on mortgages.

What would Solomon do ?

Safety nets are here for American citizens.

We can’t afford to safety net all of Mexico and the southern hemisphere.

Let's see.
All landlords are millionaires. Mao said so. In his Little Red Book.
So if they don't get their rents, for months, they won't pay the Evil Bankers.
The banks will fail, and all the property will revert to the People.
The World will be Fair.

Yeah. The logic is so clear.

Explain, again, why all Communists/Antifa/BLM/Democrats can't be butchered. It's not like they are human.

I’d actually like to see part of CA go back to Mexico.

It’s particularly galling when you realize Mexico is the richest country in Latin America. I despise Mexico and it’s people. They pull billions out of this nations economy after flooding in here and receiving taxpayer funded free health care and education.

I’d actually like to see part of CA go back to Mexico.

Only if they pay us for it. We bought California (and western states) with cash and forgiveness of Mexican debt. We didn't steal it.

Not always. It often means working poor who on paper do not qualify for assistance and who live paycheck to paycheck. This is a result of so many small businesses being forced to shutter during the lock down.

I they had a job before lockdown, and are a legal resident or citizen, they are receiving very generous unemployment payments and eligible for the myriad other programs.

It’s the illegals that have no safety net.
