Gov. Walz (MN) appeals FEMA decision to deny aid after civil unrest

Gov. Tim Walz on Friday announced he is appealing the federal government's decision to deny a major disaster declaration to help Minnesota rebuild from the rioting that broke out after George Floyd's death in police custody.

The Governor requested funds from the Federal Emergency Management Agency on July 2. That request was denied on July 10.

Walz requested funding specifically to help rebuild public infrastructure that had been damaged in the civil unrest starting on May 27.

In a news release, Walz cited the Stafford Disaster Relief and Emergency Assistance Act, which states that fires to public infrastructures regardless of cause, are eligible for federal reimbursement.

According to the governor's office, a preliminary assessment discovered more than $15 million of eligible damages directly related to fires.

'As we navigate one of the most difficult periods in our state's history, the need for support from our federal partners is more important than ever,' Walz said in a statement. 'The magnitude of this event was severe, and Minnesotans are hurting. We are asking our national leadership to join us in our efforts to help our communities to recover.'

...that fires to public infrastructures regardless of cause, are eligible for federal reimbursement.

Acts of nature, and human carelessness, might be covered, but, NOT acts that were completely preventable if the state/city had acted are expected and required. Government acts of failure to act, should never be covered, especially if said governments are politically inclined to support the illegal activities which brought on the fires and destruction

Why even have states? If Governors refuse to act as leaders and instead want to have endless "national conversations" which is only designed to advance a left-wing narrative and keep them and their ilk in power, then there's no need for states anymore.

There should be zero federal tax dollars going back to states, for any reason. If there were no federal tax dollars, Democrats everywhere at the state and local level would be tossed from office because they'd have to make tough decisions with the revenue within their own state.

He could have at least made a good faith attempt to stop the violence, but he sat on his hands. Why should taxpayers in other states have to pay for it?

Suppose the feds do give them the money to rebuild. What steps are the local government taking to prevent the same thing from happening again? As far any anyone can see they plan on doing their usual nothing.

No one needs aid to rebuild from “peaceful” protests .
“Peaceful protestors” don’t do any damage!

Sorry Timmy, but you screwed the pooch and it is fundamentally unfair to the rest of the nation to have to pick up the tab for your complicity in the devastation wrought upon your city.

You declined to use any of the tools at your disposal to pacify the same people who vote for you, so your request is also political in nature, IMO, thus, you lose.

You were offered assistance from the Federal Government when this occurred and refused, but now you want that same Federal Government to pick up the tab for your asinine “decision”? That is wrong from any way you look at it.

I have a deal for you. Round up every single rioter and looter that caused this devastation, lead them to the gallows and remove them from the world of the living, and maybe, MAYBE, then we can talk.
